"Does what it says. Easy to use."

    March 04, 2014   |   By e3j1

    Version: WipeDrive 5.0

    Pros

    Wipes HD clean.

    Cons

None. (but make sure you have your operating system on a startup disk!

    Summary

I purchased wipe drive when my computer had a nasty virus that not even formatting the HD and re-installing windows would remove. Wipe drive was intuitive and effortless. After re-installing Windows, my computer was like new. Now I run it every time I format.

"Linux takes over PC for hours"

    September 30, 2013   |   By cnetMuse

    Version: WipeDrive 5.0

    Pros

Probably does the very thorough wipe claimed.
Lets you select which drive to wipe.

    Cons

Prevents you from using your PC for days!
Requires knowledge of Windows Disk Numbers, Unix Disk Numbers, and disk boot order.

    Summary

If you don't need your PC for many hours or several days, White Canyon's WipeDrive Home might work for you (I'm still waiting after 24 hours, with 3 days to go), but you may need some technical knowledge (drive numbers, boot order, etc.).

At first I tried using my MacBook Disk Utility Secure erase to wipe my 2TB drive, but after it said 96 more hours after 2 already, I cancelled. I move my MacBook around too much daily to have a drive attached for days.

Then I went looking for PC software so my wife could do it on her PC desktop. DBAN didn't sound good, because it would boot into Linux and wipe all drives. So we paid $20 for WipeDrive Home, hoping it would run in the background like MacBook Disk Utility. No, it does the same thing as DBAN.

    1) It requires you to know the Windows disk number (hope you know disk manager).
    2) It then installs Linux on the drive and you reboot the Windows machine into Linux. Your Windows machine is now unusable for the hours or days it takes WipeDrive Home to work.
    3) You must recognize the Linux disk number (different from Windows) to select the right drive from model numbers and serial numbers it lists.

Luckily we had a variety of drives and sizes so recognizing which of the 12 and verifying the right one to Wipe wasn't very difficult. Good luck if you have to meticulously compare serial numbers.

My wife couldn't lose her PC for days either. I dug up an old Windows laptop, booted it, and installed WipeDrive, then rebooted changing the boot drive order. 1/3 of first pass (31%) done after 12 hours overnight. Only 115 more hours to go!
The 120+ Hours is wiping a 2TB drive (pulled from an old Windows Home Server we are preparing to sell) connected via simple universal USB connector for raw drives (not enclosures).

I am not so much disappointed in the time (although many days is long), but no multi tasking or Windows aspect even though it is a "Windows" tool. Also, disk numbers without reference to normal DOS drive letters when known is not very friendly.

"Breathtakingly bad - never got software"

    August 28, 2013   |   By MikeBird89

    Version: WipeDrive 5.0

    Pros

None - I never got my software!

    Cons

Atrocious customer service, I never did get the software, but PayPal rescued me with a full refund.

From the CNET link, European customers are sent off to a site where the software costs a lot more, the site is very poorly written and presented, but it seems possible to make an order. I did so, duly paid up and got e-mails confirming the transaction. But they sent the WRONG download link (to three other programmes!) and key.

I tried repeatedly to get WhiteCanyon to send the correct link and key, which you wouldn't think was rocket science, but they were incapable of getting something so simple done!

In the end, PayPal provided a full refund and I bought a new HDD instead, far simpler!

    Summary

Atrocious customer care. The European site tries to charge more, then delivers nothing!

PayPal rescued me and I just bought a new HDD instead.

    July 23, 2012   |   By mozawa

    Pros

I have not been able to use the product

    Cons

I have tried 3 times to reach customer support. Twice via the on-line chat and once by phone. Have not heard from anyone nor been able to talk with anyone. BTW - they are only open during business hours M-F.

    Summary

I have asked for a refund.

"For old computers or if you want to sell."

    December 29, 2011   |   By DemonKingHiro

    Version: WipeDrive 5.0

    Pros

    100% cleans your HD.

    Cons

None, unless you do not have a spare OS Startup disc.

    Summary

Wipedrive dose just as it says, wipes your entire hard drive. I deletes everything on it including the partion and operating system, so you will need a back up copy of your restore disc or a new OS. I would recomend using Wipedrive on a computer you intend to sell.
