CNET Editors' review
If you're not already a pro at using the command line, OnyX is a solid choice for conducting routine maintenance and tweaking the interface on your Mac. This free utility shares much of the functionality of applications like Cocktail (which its help files suspiciously resemble), and it can help you with everything from checking SMART status on your disks to configuring the Dock, Finder, and Dashboard and Expose to your liking.
OnyX can even help you run Unix utilities, change your desktop to an animated background, and unlock hidden functions in apps like Safari and iTunes. As with all OS-tinkering applications of this kind, most features work most of the time, but your mileage may vary when it comes to effectiveness and stability -- so buyer beware (especially given that OnyX doesn't cost anything). This version will only work with Lion, so check out earlier versions if you're using an older version of Mac OS X.

"Did what it claimed."
Version: OnyX (Lion) 2.4.3
Pros
I am not tech savvy at the moment. My MacBook Pro would not burn DVD because of an error in communication. OnyX Lion was easy to install. The program recommended procedures. Following that advice, among other things, I reset permissions. The problem I acquired the OnyX to solve, was solved.
Cons
I did not experience any negative attributes.

Summary
I had Onyx for my old Emac, and for Snow Leopard, glad to have this updated version for Lion.

"Have used it for years, free and works"
Version: OnyX (Lion) 2.4.3
Pros
They seem to be getting the bugs out. One of the early versions kept restarting my mac after using automatic mod. Had to start in safe. But seems to work fine now.
Cons
Having to restart, but it is free.

"Download Problem"
Version: OnyX (Lion) 2.4.3
Pros
Wanted to download onyx through CNET with expectation that CNET would be a reliable source.
Cons
After download, the only thing that showed up was X11.
Summary
So, X11 is on my Mac. There is nothing to indicate that Onyx is installed, unless this is actually the product. Since X11 seems to be an unexpected artifact, I started to look for ways to delete it. Since this is a Mac where file management is basically impossible for an average user, and the purpose of Onyx is to clean up "unwanted" stuff...I am at an impasse. So, for me, no joy!
