Poison Maps - Central & South America for iOS

By CCS Ltd Free

Developer's Description

Poison Maps (POIs on Maps) is a unique type of map app. It takes a completely different approach to that taken by other apps, which makes it uniquely useful when navigating anywhere in Central and South America.A toolbar at the bottom of the screen allows you to quickly configure the map to see exactly what you want. For example if you are travelling then just tap the Transport icon to see airports, railways, bus and tram routes, and much more. Then tap the train icon to just see railways. If you want you could then tap the metro icon to just see metro systems. We take the data from the fantastic OpenStreetMap project, which is a general purpose map, and contains every type of POI. This means that you can easily configure the map to show any type of POI, such as food, hotels, banks, toilets, fuel stations, tourist attractions, leisure, parking, shops, hills, towns, hospitals, churches, schools, libraries, rescue services, and much much more. The toolbar allows you to choose between these hundreds of POI types in just two or three taps. The app shows signs to POIs that are not in the current map area, which means that the map does not need to reposition itself if there are no POIs of the required type visible. Tapping a sign shows information on the POI; and tapping again moves the map to show the POI.On the Apple Watch the toolbar is displayed as a 3x3 grid, giving you the same ability to choose from hundreds of POI types in a very rapid two or three taps. The app includes over a million POIs and over two hundred thousand kilometres of rail, bus, cycle, hiking and ski routes. These are all stored on your device, which makes things super-fast, and allows you to navigate or find POIs even when offline. And yet all this information only takes up about the same space as a couple of music albums! The app also includes a patent-pending gesture for quickly panning large distances by temporarily zooming out. This requires just one tap of one finger instead of the multi-finger gymnastics required by the traditional pinch to zoom approach (although that is still available). It also provides a quick way of zooming out and back in again when you are not sure what area the map is showing. And on the iPhone 6S models it uses 3D Touch for even better control. With such powerful ways of easily panning the map long distances it is handy that the app also includes back and forward buttons, like on a browser.Other unique features include 3 modes for seeing what is around you: Compass mode just shows signs to the POIs. This is particularly useful when you just want to know what is around you or which way to head, and you havent got time to inspect a map, such as when cycling or hiking. It also works offline and is perfect for people who hate maps: they just follow the sign to where they want to go. Radar mode is similar but also includes a map that rotates around the current position, with nearby POIs plotted on the map and farther ones shown as signs. It includes radar rings to show the distances from the current position. Scanner mode is similar to radar mode but uniquely positions the GPS dot at the bottom of the screen so that you can see much more information in the direction that you are pointing. And these are just the unique aspects of the app. All the usual map features are also provided, such as super-fast searching, directions, bookmarks, POI information, highlighting favourite brands, and much more. You can even create your own POIs, such as where you parked your car.Note that the free version includes most of the categories, but the expansion pack is required for food & drink, shops, sport & leisure and driving data. This pack only costs a one-off price for all the POIs and is as cheap as the AppStore allows without being free.Poison Maps is not designed to replace traditional map apps, but instead to complement them with loads of unique features and abilities. Its free so give it a try!
