"Excellent tool for standalone PCs"
Version: Vista Services Optimizer 1.3.200
Pros
Ease of use, saves time when setting up a system.
Cons
For me: non. Maybe some inexperienced users find some of the options confusing.
Summary
This program saves me a lot of time. I don't have to go through all the services to decide what to enable or to disable, when installing a Windows 7 system. I strongly recommand it.

"Good for standalone PCs!"
Version: Vista Services Optimizer 1.3.200
Pros
Really can speed up a Vista PC. Easy to set up and use.
Cons
Not really any use for Windows7 in a networked home environment.
Summary
I used this a lot when I had Vista. Since upgrading to Win7 I've noticed that Win7 seems not to start as many background services. I also run network printers and backup over the network, plus network hard drives. I wasn't trusting VSO in this environment.

"Works with Windows 7 too."
Version: Vista Services Optimizer 1.3.200
Pros
It does shut down some unessential services in Windows 7 too. It helps speed up the boot time, but I have switched to a SSD drive as the boot drive too.
Cons
It did shut down 2 services that were needed to run some of my software.
Summary
This is a solid program. Use blackviper.com to find out more about XP, Vista and Windows 7 services, because you may have to re-enable a couple like I did. I recommend you make a Windows System Restore point before running this program though. If something goes wrong, it is then an easy task to fix.

Version: Vista Services Optimizer 1.2.108
Pros

"Very safe, GPL'ed with the source"
Version: Vista Services Optimizer 1.2.108
Pros
Free as berr, Free as freedom, happy GPL !
Comes with the sources (its installation comes is optional) (so everyone can inspect it or rebuild it) : means this is very safe !Cons
Not any. This really simplifies the Windows Vista Management...
Summary
The "full review" page on CNET links you to the official developer site, where you'll find also a "portable" version (requiring no installer, and that can run directly from a USB flash disk for example)
Some advanced options may be disabled, that may be needed to access to your home appliances, such as UPnP and dlna devices. Many Windows services are not very well documented by Microsoft for end-users, and were not used a lot at the beginning, but now they become more and more used and may be needed : get sure that you won't disable functions "automatically" that your environment may need.
In all cases, this program offers you to restore the Windows default settings, and disable only specific features. This program will help you manage all these complex options spread everywhere in the Vista configuraiton panel, (or sometimes only within registry settings that are badly documented by Microsoft) with just a few clicks.
This is probably safer this way that using regedit and forgetting were was the entry that yuo had modified or deleted or created in the past within the registry. -
"Yea Baby, Awesome."
