Word processors work wonderfully, right up until the time you need to draw a diagram to illustrate your work. SmartDraw provides a handy shortcut for anyone in this situation, offering a plethora of diagram templates and art elements that eliminate the need to start from scratch.A huge variety of possible uses has been included, from software engineering or business modeling to anatomical illustration. Generic templates include flowcharts, organizational charts, mind maps, family trees, ER diagrams, and far more. A clip-art collection helps fill out the basic templates, and a drag-and-drop tool lets users easily add frequently used symbol combinations. The program also functions as a standalone drawing tool, supporting free-hand drawing, image layers, text, and tables. Work can be saved in a number of formats including JPEG, PDF, HTML and AutoCAD Interchange.
As a fast illustration or business tool for someone who's not doing full-blown design work, we think this program functions extraordinarily well.

Version: SmartDraw 2008.11
"A great program improved still further!"
Pros: SmartDraw 2008 provides significant improvements to an already great piece of software!
I've been a very happy user of SmartDraw for many years - since version 3.0 or 4.0. Exactly where I started with it is lost now in the mists of time and disappeared from memory. :-)
This new version provides several major changes and a number of enhancements. There is also a 'ribbon' interface, a la MS Office.
Users of earlier versions of SmartDraw (except 2007, which also had a similar look) might find the new interface takes a bit of getting used to, as I did. For example, I was initially challenged when I couldn't find the "File > Save" option in the tab menus. After some puzzlement, I clicked the red SD 2008 button at the top left - and voila! There was the File menu! A real "Duh!" moment for me. ;-)
However, even if you find there's a bit of a learning curve with navigation, the new features and enhancements make the effort well worth it! For example:
1) The program loads much more quickly than SD 2007, and operation is faster too.
2) Once I got used to where the various tools and buttons are located, accessing them to insert and edit objects was much quicker than before.
3) Greater automation of both flowcharts and gantt charts has made the job of creating them so much easier and faster for me
4) The capacity to use linked mindmaps linked and gantt charts - a very handy feature!
5) Even better integration with MS Office and Acrobat - transferring SD diagrams into other programs is a real breeze!
6) Photo editing on-the-fly. Although I've not used this much yet, it has worked really well for me. I can see it's a feature I'll use regularly, saving considerable time and effort when a photo I'm including needs to be 'tweaked' - instead of having to open that file in another graphic program to do the job.
Once you get used to navigating between the various tools and features, it's even easier and more enjoyable to use than previous versions!

Version: SmartDraw 2008.11
Pros: Using Word or PowerPoint drawing just doesn't cut it ... you can waste so much time on a crappy drawing. This is much easier and more powerful.

"SmartDraw made me look like a rockstar!"
Pros: I was working on a presentation for my bosses and the situation was looking pretty dire. I was in desperate need of some cool graphics to jazz up my PowerPoint. I found SmartDraw and downloaded the free trial, and knew I couldn't live without it! Needless to say, my presentation was a huge success and now I am up for a promotion!

"SmartDraw makes me look good."
Pros: I can't draw a stick figure in a snow storm. I've never been good with a pencil, paintbrush, photoshop, or anything artistic.
Despite all that, when I'm done with a project in Smartdraw, I look like I was an art major instead of the Econ nerd I really am.
Wasted years on Visio, Excel and PowerPoint. Smartdraw beats em all because what I do looks better and takes a hell of a lot less time. Thank you smartdraw!
Cons: It was a little expensive when I was still a student. But it's cheaper than the competition, and now that I use it at work it saves me money by saving me time.
