Zelle® is a free U.S.-based digital payment network that facilitates bank-to-bank transfers without using an external wallet. While it can offer some utility for business transactions, the standalone version has been retired and no longer supports direct transactions or user interaction.

All its functionality now exists solely within the mobile apps and online platforms of over 2,200 participating banks and credit unions, making it accessible within existing productivity tools offered by financial institutions. If you want to send or receive money through Zelle®, use your financial institution's supported application. It continues as a bank-integrated feature only.

Bank-to-bank made easy

The original Zelle® mobile app has been phased out. It no longer offers any access to transaction history, contact lists, or payment capabilities. Users who previously enrolled through the app must now migrate to a participating financial institution’s platform. The transition ends all app-based functionality, eliminating even the previously available viewing tools. It now operates entirely through third-party bank apps that have adopted its transfer system.

It's now fully embedded within the apps of partnered banks and credit unions. Payments occur between linked checking accounts through your bank's interface. It doesn’t store funds or act as a digital wallet. It provides no balanced overview or card linking options. The financial institution handles all account management and transaction history functions. It's simply the transfer mechanism embedded in the bank’s digital environment.

Though there are no standalone functions to access directly from the tool. Features like scheduling transfers, viewing prior activity, or adding recipients all take place within your bank’s interface. The brand continues as a back-end service only. The original tool now essentially redirects users to other bank partners or provides notice of retirement without offering any usable tools or interactions.

  • Pros

    • Widely supported by U.S. banks
    • Direct account-to-account transfer method
    • No separate login or Zelle account needed
    • No stored balances to manage
  • Cons

    • Standalone app no longer functional
    • Requires participation from your bank

Bottom Line

The integrated transfer

Zelle® no longer functions as a standalone service and is now available only through participating banks and credit unions. The original app has been fully retired, with no remaining features or utilities. All tasks, from sending money, receiving payments, reviewing activity, are handled entirely through your financial institution’s mobile platform. It serves as an integrated transfer method, dependent on your bank’s tools and interface.

Developer’s Description

Zelle is the fast, safe, easy way to send money to friends and family.

Zelle has partnered with leading banks and credit unions across the U.S. to bring you a fast, safe, easy way to send money to friends and family. Your money moves from bank account to bank account, with no holding accounts to cash out. If your bank or credit union offers Zelle, you already have it in your mobile banking app or online banking - if they don't, the Zelle app will make it easy for you to send money to enrolled Zelle users that already have access through their financial institution.

THIS IS HOW MONEY MOVES

Zelle is the new way to send money in minutes between bank accounts in the U.S.

Using just your recipient's email address or U.S. mobile number, you can settle up safely - on the spot - with almost anyone. With Zelle, money moves simply and safely, so you don't need to cash out of any holding accounts or make unnecessary trips to the ATM when it's time to pay friends or get paid back.

Even better, Zelle does not charge any fees to use the service. (Mobile carrier or bank fees may apply.)

GET STARTED:

1. Enroll using a Visa or MasterCard debit card linked to a U.S. checking account.

2. Choose a person to pay, or request money from, by entering their U.S. mobile number or email address.

3. Confirm the amount and hit send. If they're already registered enrolled with Zelle, they'll typically get the money in minutes. If they aren't, they will be notified and can follow a few simple steps to complete the payment.
