Over time, the Windows Registry becomes a tangled jungle as programs are installed and removed and the debris of daily computing piles up. A good registry cleaner can scan your registry for invalid, orphaned, and corrupted entries and take out the trash, which typically makes your PC run a bit faster, more smoothly, and more safely. Registry Cleaner Free promises to analyze, clean, and optimize your registry. However, we found that the "free" part only goes so far.
Registry Cleaner Free has the stylish dark background, white fonts, and large, sleek, 3D buttons typical of the breed. The program immediately began scanning our system as soon as we opened it, quickly performing Registry Clean, Privacy Sweep, Junk File Removal, and System Optimization procedures. We clicked the button to repair the problems Registry Cleaner Free identified, but we received a pop-up telling us that the Free version only fixes five problems and that we had to buy the Pro version to fix them all. Our three options were Get Pro, Enter SN, and Try. We clicked Try, but it only returned us to the main interface, and a second scan merely repeated the whole process. An Advanced button only activated the same scan functions. We clicked a button called Utilities, which accessed various Windows tools and features such as the Control Panel and System Information as well as some small utilities like a File Pulverizer and Cloned FileCleaner. None of that made up for this program's limited functionality.
We were disappointed with Registry Cleaner Free, which is basically designed to get you to buy the Pro version. There are some capable registry and system cleaners out there that are real, true freeware and yet also pack as many extras as Registry Cleaner Free. We suggest shopping around.
