An increasingly credible rival to MS Office, OpenOffice.org includes powerful applications for making text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, diagrams, and databases, as well as HTML and XML documents. Not only does it let you edit basic documents, such as letters and faxes, it also handles complex and multipart documents with bibliographies, reference tables, and indexes.

The interface is similar to that of MS Office users, and even advanced Office users will find almost everything they're used to: templates, collaborative features (versions, recording changes), macros, and even a programming language. OpenOffice.org lets you open and save documents in formats as diverse as MS Office, PDF, HTML, and XML. However, it normally saves files in the open-standard Oasis OpenDocument XML format, for maximum compatibility with other applications. We were pleased to find that stability has improved too. No doubt about it, OpenOffice.org is a compelling option for anyone in search of an alternative office suite.

"Impressive for the price, but..."

June 23, 2007  |  By carnevales

 |  Version: OpenOffice.org 2.2

Pros

I like OpenOffice.org because it's a relatively robust productivity suite for free. You can save documents in PDF format (why MS Office doesn't include this functionality is a mystery). You can save to and open MS Office docs and other popular formatted docs.

Cons

I don't like the very limited and not-too-user friendly help and tech support. It's MS Office compatibility is limited only to those docs that are most basic. Some advanced features are not very intuitive (creating and formatting a chart in Calc is unduly complicated).

Bottom line -- OpenOffice.org is an adequate productivity suite, especially for the price. So, it's perfect for basic users on a budget. But, if you demand any level of easy to use advanced functionality you're going to get what you pay for. It's easy to overhype OpenOffice.org because of it's price and relative quality compared to other productivity knock-offs. It's easy to hate MS Office because it costs a lot of money and, well, it's MS and people love to hate a product that is so ubiquitous (i.e. Windows, iPod) simply because it is so ubiquitous - I bet they wouldn't feel so bad about them if they had created them and made a good living off them. But, let's face it, MS Office is the premier productivity suite for a reason: it's full featured, functional (of course, not perfectly) and relatively intuitive (though not as much as the old WordPerfect editions). So, it's not free...but you get what you pay for in life. When I want to be productive I'm willing to pay for something that works, is easy to use and enjoys widespread support. Chicken wire and chewing gum may hold for a while, but in the long run it just won't do.

"Amazing alternitive to Microsoft Office."

June 18, 2007  |  By seanmagn

 |  Version: OpenOffice.org 2.2

Pros

The modest price tag of "free" may be the deciding factor for people to switch to using openoffice. It has all of the features of Microsoft Office, and then some.

Cons

The lack of a grammar checker is a little disappointing for how great it is otherwise.

"OOo Writer does not have "normal" view, making it useless for longer documents."

June 13, 2007  |  By RiemerT

 |  Version: OpenOffice.org 2.2

Pros

1. It is not Microsoft

2. It is free

3. It is MS Office compatible

Cons

OOo Writer displays the pages the way they are printed, that is with top and bottom margins including headers and footers. If you scroll through your document, you see those margins all the time and you cannot turn them off, like in MS Word. Also, OOo does not have "Normal View" that displays just the text you are editing, like old-fashioned word processors did. There's no way to get rid of those margins on the screen, which makes OOo pretty useless for writing longer articles. Professionals writers, journalists, scientists, OOo is not the software you need.

"Do EVERYTHING with OpenOffice. From writing a letter to digital scrapbooking."

June 13, 2007  |  By maryanndennis

 |  Version: OpenOffice.org 2.2

Pros

I like it all!! You can do so much with Open Office, that I will never need or get to learn as much as I would like to.

Cons

The technical terminology used in the help section is too technical for easy learning by someone that has never used an office program. When following instructions, we have to go look up and find out what each "term" means and where to find it before we can proceed with the instruction. Along with instruction, maybe in parenthesis, something like (you can find this at such and such a place), or (this is the little box on the right side of the tool bar). Any little bit would help! :)

"Good but not as good as Microsoft Office"

June 08, 2007  |  By Walter Plinge

 |  Version: OpenOffice.org 2.2

Pros

It's free. When I bought I upgraded my motherboard and formatted/reinstalled XP instead of re-installing MS Office 2003 I thought I give OpenOffice a try. It's good and does everything I need but it's not as attractive or easy to use as Office. After several months of using OO I've reinstalled Office 2003. I much prefer it.

Cons

Office 2003 is faster to start and opens/saves documents noticeably faster. The user interface is more attractive and easier to use. Office checks grammar as you type and the AU dictionary contains most Australian place names (OO is said to have an AU dictionary but I couldn't get it to work). On one particular document I have page border. OO never did this correctly - it changed the margins on every save and distorted the border. Under MS Office the page border is stable.

If you haven't got an office suite and can't afford or don't like MS then OO is great - go for it. You'll be happy. But, if like me, you already own MS Office (even an older version) or can afford a new edition then OO is not all that an attractive alternative. Stick with Microsoft.
