CNET editors' review

Reviewed by: CNET Staff

An increasingly credible rival to MS Office, OpenOffice.org includes powerful applications for making text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, diagrams, and databases, as well as HTML and XML documents. Not only does it let you edit basic documents, such as letters and faxes, it also handles complex and multipart documents with bibliographies, reference tables, and indexes.

The interface is similar to that of MS Office users, and even advanced Office users will find almost everything they're used to: templates, collaborative features (versions, recording changes), macros, and even a programming language. OpenOffice.org lets you open and save documents in formats as diverse as MS Office, PDF, HTML, and XML. However, it normally saves files in the open-standard Oasis OpenDocument XML format, for maximum compatibility with other applications. We were pleased to find that stability has improved too. No doubt about it, OpenOffice.org is a compelling option for anyone in search of an alternative office suite.

    "Why Pay For MS Office?"

by Stefan. on March 31, 2007

Pros: Works just as well as MS Office. Includes custom installation. MS Office goes from between $149 to $699.27. Open Office goes from between $0 to $0.

Cons: Not as well as known as MS Office. This leads to companies and teachers insisting on the use of MS Office, because they don't know there's an alternative.

    "incredible"

by torejorgen on March 30, 2007

    Pros: It's legal.

    It's free.

    It's great.!

Saving the files as MS Office fileformats and there is no compability problems.

I also used MS Office, untill one year ago, when i desided to try out OOo 2.0.

Now they have come to OOo 2.2, and its better and more secure then ever...!

Why use a month's pay on MS Office, when OOo is completly free..?

    It even makes PDF files...

    Cons: none.?

I heard a teatcher complain about the students delivering homework in OOo format, she only had MS Office...

DONT MAKE THE STUDENTS PAY FOR MS OFFICE...

Make them save as MS Office fileformat, or install OOo yourself, after all, its free...

    "OpenOffice is Great! Thanks!"

by Ishigamma on April 7, 2007

Pros: I saved a lot of money since I used this coz its FREE!

I'm using this office for almost six months since its version 2.0 and found no dismay!

The best alternative to MS Office! You can do basic office found in MS Office like calc:excel, writer:word and impress:power point

Easily I can export my document into PDF...Great!

Multiple format supported compare to MS OFFICE! It supports one of my favourite document format...the high compressed format .pdb/prc. Really saves memory.

When typing, it supports automatic/predictive text input in English.

Why spend money for LUXURIOUS OFFICE APPS if you can download this for FREE!

    "Fantasic, esp for the price."

by angryliberal on April 1, 2007

Pros: I can't think of any essential function of Office that this suite doesn't match. I have used it for nearly two years and it has never let me down or caused any compatibility problems. I have Office at work and can easily work from home using OpenOffice.

Cons: A little slow opening word files the first time you've used them in awhile, but so what? A sip of coffee later and you're just as good to go. An add on that's an equally good version of Outlook would be nice too.
