Nitro's new free PDF reader takes the key features that you want in a PDF reader, a familiar interface, and smooth functionality and combines them into an eminently usable program that doesn't get in between you and your documents. Nitro has turned the free PDF alternative business model on its ear by providing you with a smart selection of watermark-free editing, drag-and-drop PDF creation, and tabbed PDF reading.

To put it mildly, the feature set is robust. Users can comment on PDFs using notes and text markup, fill out forms, print to PDF, or create one by dragging an existing document into Nitro, share and comment with others, and securely sign a document. This may sound like standard PDF boilerplate, but it's important to emphasize given that they're all free here, and they all work well. The search utility isn't bad, although it would be nice to see Windows 7-style federated in-document searching. The drag-and-drop took a few seconds to begin once initiated, but overall converting a four-page Word document took about 2 minutes. The highlight tool will switch automatically from box highlighting to character highlighting, depending on whether you start highlighting in an empty space or over some text. Nitro sports a ribbon-style interface borrowed from the previously released paid version of Nitro. This may still frustrate some users, but it feels slick and connected to Microsoft Office. If you don't like or need the ribbon, you can hide it with an arrow that lives to the left of the search engine. You can also customize the ribbon, placing your most commonly accessed tools where you need them.

In testing, Nitro's functionality kept pace with its comprehensive toolset. When you install it, it will ask if you want to contribute anonymous usage data. Users are opted in automatically, so if you don't like contributing don't install on autopilot. Nitro PDF Reader Free does more by default than any free PDF reader currently available, does precisely what it advertises, and does it unobtrusively, rocketing it to the top of the PDF pack.

 |  Version: Nitro PDF Reader (64-bit) 2.0.0.29

Pros

OK as PDF Reader

Cons

Installs plug-in in IE and Firefox for in-browser viewing (without prompting for confirmation). Disabling the plug-in breaks PDF downloading - had deinstall it.

"Warning: 64-bit download is actually 32-bit!"

August 19, 2011  |  By rklrkl

 |  Version: Nitro PDF Reader (64-bit) 2.0.0.29

Pros

Looks like a slick reader, even if it does have a dubious ribbon-style interface

Cons

download.cnet.com is the only place to download this reader (the Nitro PDF Reader even links back to here), so it's highly annoying that the 64-bit download is actually a 32-bit installer and application!

Summary

Nice reader, shame about the woefully wrong "bitness" of the packaging - no 64-bit version is available at the time of writing! I've reported it to download.cnet.com, so hopefully this will be fixed soon.

 |  Version: Nitro PDF Reader (64-bit) 2.0.0.29

Pros

Seems very versatikle.

Cons

I receive PDF files from various sources. Nitro has taken command over Adobe, but Nitro will not read many of these files. So, I deleted Nitro.

"Nitro 2.0.0.29 (64-bit) (Windows 7) - Good, but..."

July 20, 2011  |  By dizzyqueen

 |  Version: Nitro PDF Reader (64-bit) 2.0.0.29

Pros

-Highly intuitive interface.
-Large, colorful tool icons so you don't have to squint to find tools.
-Tool ribbon is well-laid-out.
-Fast, easy PDF creator.
-It's NOT Foxit Reader 5.0.1.0523, and has none of the hassles of that version of Foxit.

Cons

-There aren't any formatting options to allow one to change the exposure and the background color of the page.
-One can't adjust the page view from the default scrolling view.
-Help feature is disabled; alternate online User Manual is out-of-date.

Summary

Nitro 2.0.0.29 is light, fast, and well-featured. Nitro does what the company claims it will do. It installed easily and quickly.

I was impressed with the intuitive layout and colorful graphics. Documents open just as fast as with Foxit Reader 4.x

It's easy and fast to convert the following file types to PDF Documents:
-MS Office (incl. Word & Excel)
-WordPerfect
-HTML
-Text files
-Images

On my computer, 1 to 5-page Word & Excel documents converted in about 6 seconds each, and an 18-page document converted in less than 12 seconds. All formatting carried over to the PDF, including tables and layouts. Options are provided for size of document, font selection/embedding, layout, converting images, and location to save file.

There were no bloatware programs installed with the download (Ask Toolbar, etc.).

One major problem: the Help Feature("User Manual") is non-functional. One can search for topics, but when you click on the topic, the page display is blank. I found an online User Manual at http://www.nitroreader.com/Support/Nitro_Reader_EN.pdf, but it appears to be quite outdated. For instance, the online manual tells how to select alternate page displays (continuous, single, facing, etc.), but the "Display Pages" Tool" they show is not on the View Panel of the Tasks Ribbon on v. 2.0.0.29.

I tried opening the User Manual from the Program Files (x86) location where the program installed on my laptop. I was able to open the file Nitro_PDF_User_Guide.chm but it contained no data, either.

BOTTOM LINE:
I like that I can convert documents to PDF in a free reader.

I fled to Nitro after Foxit Reader's release of their horrific version 5.0.1.0523. For my uses, Nitro has most of the features I need. I am not a power PDF user, so I can't speak for those who are.

PDF power users may find it short of some features they need. One would wish that display options and a usable Users Guide were available in the free edition.

Updated on Nov 14, 2011

Update: I finally uninstalled Nitro because it kept forcing itself and a couple of sub-programs (not toolbars) into Startup. I've found that PDF-XChange viewer meets my needs much better.

"2.0 Brings Productivity & Trusted Efficiency Together."

June 26, 2011  |  By victoriahouserob

 |  Version: Nitro PDF Reader (64-bit) 2.0.0.29

Pros

Nitro PDF Reader 2.0 is available on both 32 (x86) and 64 based Windows Operating Systems. This updated version sacrifices little of what made it a truly viable Adobe Competitor, particularly in cost and Storage Size. New tools make Nitro Rock.

Cons

Although the Free Version contains many new additions and integrates with windows; pictures etc. nearly seamless with most programs; Nitro 2.0 Free does limit some capabilities and integration with Firefox is not perfect. Paid version roughly $100

Summary

The Nitro 2.0 PDF Reader is a massive improvement in both the interoperability of itself with most standard document; media files and even though not perfect; no PDF readers are. The dramatically smaller size to the Benchmark; Adobe, allows for must faster upload/download, file conversion, start up and overall Quality and Productivity. Given the PDF market's unique characteristics, Nitro is a much better alternative than Adobe for the majority of Home and Small Business users; staying away from the increasingly complex; feature rich, yet unused capabilities Adobe and even Fox-it Readers have. The cost of any PDF Full Version or Pro Package is always going to be very high, typically more than any Windows Professional Suite in itself. The relatively (substantial) lower cost of the Nitro 2.0 Professional or Paid Version gives most of the features any Individual, Business or Organization would Require, is simply more streamlined and in Cost Terms; provides far superior Value to its competitors. 2.0 is a big step up from the original Nitro which tended to have many issues in conversions and seemed plagued by crashing or freezing when using in browsers while lacking the now Free and Excellent Digital Signature Component. Unless a die hard Adobe fan or use Adobe for the very Advanced Multimedia and Creative Design Suites; its hard to think of any reason why not to use Nitro 2.0 over Adobe, unless they come out with a slimmed down, more "Common Task" version; while its other best Competitor Fox it still seems to be struggling to find its place in the market with too many options, too many attempts to match Reader, too many deceptively "Free" or easy to understand components in its interface and options; ultimately making a confusing, so, so product with the addition of one too many spam type toolbars, home page redirect and sets, search engine intrusion and other third party software the best of us can't help but avoid wasting time removing, lest the frustration of constantly and carefully unticking pop ups.
Bottom Line: Nitro PDF Reader 2.0 packs a punch of value, has all the necessary components a Reader would desire, is exceptional value to upgrade to the Full Version yet still has the best Free, no nonsense PDF Reader most would want. This big improvement is Five Stars and a No Brainer in the current field.
