The entire point of workflow software is to make work better organized and more efficient. It's certainly not supposed to make things more difficult. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happens with ISS Smart Flow Freeware Edition. The program's unintuitive interface makes potentially useful features a tremendous pain to use.

At first glance, the program's interface looks nice enough. It has a sleekness to it and is a bit reminiscent of Office 2007 products. But users are soon confronted with Work Processes, WorkFlow Templates, and Document Templates, and it's not at all obvious how any of these are to be set up or used. Even something as simple as adding an entry to the Contacts database is unintuitive; instead of providing a button for adding new entries, the program expects users to know that they have to right-click on a contact group in order to add someone to it. The same is true of the calendar. Meanwhile, redundant menus and buttons duplicate the same functions. Although the program comes with a collection of eight user manuals, they are not particularly well written. After spending quite some time fiddling with this program, our impression is that though it may have some useful characteristics, overall it is more trouble than it's worth. There are many similar programs out there that are much easier to use.

ISS Smart Flow Freeware Edition is free. It comes as a ZIP file and installs desktop icons without asking, but it does uninstall cleanly. We do not recommend this program.

The scanned documents, the references to paper documents and the links to files and Internet pages are treated as all other documents. Smart Flow provides automatic filling-in of frequently used electronic documents, by using document templates and separating the data from the documents.

What's new in this version: Version 1.9.4 adds the possibility to select individual attachments when importing e-mails.
