"VERY USEFUL PRODUCT"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
This software is simple and easy to use. I tried with JPG and PDF documents and it works great. Thank you Softi Software and CNET for making it available.
Cons
No Cons in the software as far as I could see. However, if you original is not good enough , you should process the image before using OCR FREE to get the best result.

"Did a great job from JPEGs"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
Easy install, intuitive interface, fast, accurate
Cons
None, for my needs.
Summary
I scanned two pages of business addresses (column form with column separation lines) into JPEG format. Scanned quality was not too good: slightly blurred but quite legible, page not perfectly vertical, each page a separate document. Pulled picture into OCR app, selected area rectangle of interest (including column separation lines) and bam! Got an editable doc in tab form. Copied into XL for cleanup. It did 95% of the work!! Very pleased.

"Gets the job done"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
Succesfully performs OCR on PDF documents and exports the text.
Cons
Always exports to plain text. Does not convert PDF into a searchable text document.
Summary
Hard to complain too much about this program considering it is free. It gets the job done in performing OCR.

"It will not install"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
I don't know...
Cons
It will not install. (Error 11)
Summary
More than useless, a waste of time.
-
"Not what i needed"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
works as manual recognition
Cons
needed automation for quick testing
Summary
limited but works
-
"Failed to install."
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
No idea - never installed.
Cons
I had the exact same problem as mschwartz1981.
Summary
Might be cool if you can get it installed - good luck with that! :P

"Installer Crashes"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
Error 11 while opening this file:
An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format
It then looks for DROPPED_20100101190241.tizCons
After the CNET downloader gets the software installer, the installer crashes with the above error.
Summary
Really would have like to try this software.
-
"requires you to OCR each page separately"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
good character recognition
Cons
if you want to OCR more than 5 pages, this software is terrible, because you have to run each page separately through the OCR. I have a PDF of 325 pages, so I would have to do the OCR process for each file separately.
Summary
Good if you need to OCR just a couple of pages, but for longer documents (10+ pages) you need something else.
-
"Very satisfactory"
Version: FreeOCR 3.0
Pros
I wish I could show the quality of the characters that I gave FreeOCR to read. You would immediately understand that it performed great and why the three misreadings that it made were really impossible to avoid.
Cons
None really, but for me it would have been nice if FreeOCR would be able to recognize a table.
Summary
simple straight forward and effective
