A free program with a laudably simple goal, this download turns PDF files into text format. Its simplicity comes with a cost, however. The interface is extremely plain, except for a handful of prominently displayed buttons and links to the developer's other work. It functions well enough with PDF files that are wholly text, but when we tested it on files such as e-books that included photographs or calendars with notes, it often had problems, up to and including failing to recognize the file or the graphic elements. Tables were converted, but the end result was often unrecognizable. The program's output can be viewed and saved as separate pages or as a whole. On the whole, we might recommend the download to computer users working with very simple PDF documents, but anyone trying to extract the entirety of e-books or other complicated files should probably look elsewhere.Publisher's description

Version: Free PDF Text Reader 1.1.38
Pros: I want to read a pdf file using an audible voice, and for some reason the Adobe read feature doesn't work for me. I have a text-to-speech reader that converts pdf files, but it doesn't do a very good job. This program does a fine job. It doesn't bother me that there are features that this program doesn't claim to have advertized in the program. The developer needs to have some motive for making this program available at no cost. Most of the pdf to text converters cost and their demos are severely crippled. This one is not.
Cons: Doesn't convert to rtf. Doesn't paint my house for me. Just does what it says it does. That doesn't make it lame, just honest.

Pros: I needed to extract the text out of a PDF file. It did exactly that very simply and quickly.

"does this do anything useful??"
Cons: The conversion results are pretty much what you would get by copying and pasting text from a pdf. Basically, I found this useless.
