Peek into the second-by-second workings of your system, but don't expect explanations from this advanced executable. Except for the font, Filemon's simple columnar text interface is preset and unchangeable. You get a real-time display of every file that reads, opens, closes or looks for data on your system. This is a great way to watch for telltale virus activity.
That is, if you know what you're looking at. This is a "just the facts" program. Filemon lists the time, process, request, result and file path for every file that activates. The information speeds by faster than you can follow, but it is easy to redirect the output to a file, stop auto scrolling, or filter output. The last is a powerful function as filtering uses wildcards, includes, excludes, and highlighting. Even novices will quickly learn to manipulate this utility to find answers, providing they know how to recognize anomalies.
The beauty of this utility is its small size, low overhead, and quick results. However, it lacks any method to sort columns, manipulate data, or explain what it finds. Filemon is freeware and easily placed in an USB toolbox. This is an everyday tool for advanced users, and a great peek into the system for novices looking to understand their computers.
Publisher's description
From Microsoft :FileMon monitors and displays file system activity on a system in real-time. Its advanced capabilities make it a powerful tool for exploring the way Windows works, seeing how applications use the files and DLLs, or tracking down problems in system or application file configurations. Filemon's timestamping feature will show you precisely when every open, read, write or delete, happens, and its status column tells you the outcome. FileMon is so easy to use that you'll be an expert within minutes. It begins monitoring when you start it, and its output window can be saved to a file for off-line viewing. It has full search capability, and if you find that you're getting information overload, simply set up one or more filters.

Version: Filemon 7.04
"Extremely helpful, but could use some features"
Pros: Displays what your programs are doing and how much of your resources they're using up. Found out that Google Desktop was a HOG and got rid of it. Very nice little utility.
Cons: It would be nice it if did something other than just show you the data. For instance, group it together so you can see that certain programs are using all your resources. As it is, you have to save it to a text file, paste it into Excel, organize it then subtotal it then export it to a chart. Cumbersome.
