CNET Editors' review
The Device Doctor is a software application used to scan devices on your computer for driver updates. Once the scan is finished, this application also offers a way to download the missing updates to improve the speed and quality of your device.
Once you bring Device Doctor up on your desktop, the steps are very simple. It says to plug in any external devices and then to press Begin Scan. After a short wait, you will be given a list of devices that require driver updates. The first time we did the scan, it came up with 20 devices that required driver updates. We tested the scan again and discovered a glitch. Now it said 220 devices were found, and a third scan resulted in 2,220 devices. The list of devices, however, remained the same, so it was strange but not a major problem. You can select a device -- only one at a time, apparently, which we thought was odd -- and then press Download Driver, which will take you to a Web site to download. Many of the files range from 70 to 100 MB. A good feature of this application is the Settings Tab, which allows you to schedule an automatic scan at startup.
The download and installation process was simple and quick. Always read through everything, though, so you don't accidentally approve another download. There wasn't much to read through, and it was similar to any other installation process. Overall we were satisfied with what this application had to offer.

"BEWARE! Installs hidden toolbars!"
Version: Device Doctor 2.0
Pros
None that I'm aware of I uninstalled it before I really used it.
Cons
Despite using custom install, and declining each page of crappy toolbars, emoticons and other "software" Device Doctor STILL INSTALLED a toolbar, and 2 or 3 other components that were NOT disclosed.

I'm rethinking CNET reviews now after having installed this POS. I have a number of years in the IT Industry and should have known better than to install this that may be why I am so irate at the moment.

"The absolute worst app. Ive came across."
Version: Device Doctor 2.0
Pros
No pros. to speak of.
Cons
Only cons.
Summary
The absolute worst app. Ive had the chance to come across. It was really quite comical. It detected all drivers that were older than my already installed drivers, or incompatible drivers. How this rated so high with the editors is a mystery to me.

"Doesn't work properly!!"
Version: Device Doctor 2.0
Pros
1. It might work sometimes
2. It suggests creating a system restore pointCons
Found several devices it said were out-of-date
1. even though I had updated a device it found (still said was out of date), and AMD graphics driver
2. Worse, and scary, its links for downloading, I do not believe point to the proper file to download. For example, it had downloaded a Matrox graphics driver even though I don't have that card!
3. I downloaded an "updated" Asus/Intel chipset file it said was out-of-date, but even after updating with the file it said it was still (not to mention I can't even be sure if it was the right file it pointed me to!)
Frankly I'm worried I either (in the Intel chipset case) installed older drivers or totally incorrect ones. At least I created a system restore point. As for the second driver I tried installing, and AMD one, I have a 4200 series graphics card and it d/l the 7200 one. Fortunately the AMD software is smart enough to analyze before installing.Summary
It found 10 devices needing updating. At zero-for-two so far, I don't want to go further with this program.

"Couldn't tell if it was working or not..."
Version: Device Doctor 2.0
Pros
If it doesn't work, then none.
Cons
No feedback for the user. I couldn't tell if it was working or not.
Summary
I've used Device Doctor before as freeware. It worked ok. I took a chance and paid for Device Doctor Pro. Tried to use it and finally just deleted it.
It offers no indication that it's even working other than simply stating 'downloading'. There is no other indication that anything is going on. No status bar. Not countdown. Nothing. With the large size of some of the drivers it downloads, I would like to know how long it will take. Also, the program has a column for driver program size. This never showed anything.
So...who knows whether it was working or not? I guess I'll go back to the free version and take my chances.
