As long as your system is performing to expectations, there's no reason to risk trouble by weed-whacking your registry. On the other hand, tossing out junk left behind by Web sites and programs can boost your system's performance. If you like the idea of a free system cleaner but are put off by tools that do too much or don't offer enough user control, try AppCleaner. Like the others, AppCleaner finds and removes old, obsolete, and broken files, freeing up disk space and system resources, but only where you tell it to look. It offers several secure delete levels; uninstaller, startup manager, and system restore tools; and no adware.

AppCleaner is a compact download, and it has a plain but clean and well-laid-out interface that is commendably free of huge and garish fonts. A tabbed side panel let us access the Cleaner, Tools, and Options, and each tab was itself tabbed with entries. The main tool, the Cleaner, has two controls, Analyze and Clean. But we immediately saw how AppCleaner differs from the other cleaners: Instead of selecting every entry for scanning and requiring users to de-select the items they want to keep, AppCleaner only scans those items you select with checkmarks, which means you need to understand what you're telling it to scan. This keeps inexperienced users from deleting stuff they shouldn't and lets advanced users scan specific targets. The program's default selections are minimal, as we learned when our scan finished. Nearly all the entries it returned were browser cache files, which we selected and removed by pressing Clean. We returned to the Apps, Browsers, Registry, and Windows tabs, selecting those entries we wanted to scan, and clicked the Analyze button again. AppCleaner quickly returned expanded results. We could right-click any entry to call up a detailed view of the scan results. Some items showed yellow caution signs, indicating errors. Opening the detailed view let us quickly determine which entries could be removed and which required more attention.

AppCleaner is a great choice for inexperienced users since it keeps them from doing harm and helps educate them about their registry and system as they use it. For advanced users, AppCleaner has the flexibility, power, and no-nonsense layout you've been looking for.

"Decent system cleaner"

August 10, 2012  |  By Roger_Cents

 |  Version: AppCleaner 1.11

Pros

The free system cleaner from the guys at UpdateStar offers to clean left-overs of a a huge number of program. Interestingly more than Ccleaner is able to clean. Plus has more features like Windows startup program control, safe erase of free hard disk space and some more.

Cons

None I could see, it is freeware.

Summary

I don't know, if it is the best cleaner ever, but definitely good for a quick system cleanup and a number of cleaning tasks.

"The best system cleaner anywhere!!!"

May 26, 2012  |  By tomhallmindspring

 |  Version: AppCleaner 1.9

Pros

This program does it all, where others are not so comprehensive necessitating running multiple cleaners to get your system cleansed. Very user friendly, and remarkably fast in execution. AppCleaner is far more thorough than CCleaner; Zappit; Bleachbit; and others.

Cons

None noted.

Summary

The best overall system cleaner I have found. I have deleted others from my system since installing AppCleaner. It is the best.

"It is a big falure."

March 08, 2012  |  By hueassa

 |  Version: AppCleaner 1.8

Pros

Nothing to say.

Cons

It destroyed working programmes.

It destroyed some favorite URLs, including my email homepage.

Its backup was not correct, so Windows could not restore registry.

In brief, it is a big falure.

Pros

Cons

broke my vista
broke restore
broke management console
broke everything I tried in control panel
broke search files & folders, etc etc etc.

"CNET should re-evaluate thier review on this one"

December 21, 2011  |  By PhilNic

 |  Version: AppCleaner 1.7.4359

Pros

None if you run XP

Cons

Has the possibility to seriously trash Windows XP operating system

Summary

It is quite clear from some of the comments here, that this program can have serious issues when running under Windows XP.

I do not think that any program that can damage an operating system beyond repair should be given an "Outstanding" rating by the editors.

CNET should re-evaluate this program bearing in mind that there are people still running Windows XP, and post a new review accordingly.

Updated on Dec 21, 2011

OOps, this comment should have gone under the previous version.

"Doesn't work with XP!!!!! (another one to say this)"

December 08, 2011  |  By J-WELLS

 |  Version: AppCleaner 1.6.4297

Pros

None so far

Cons

As the other guys have said, it leaves XP a mess. Drag-and-drop didn't work, I couldn't bring up the task bar (I use auto hide, so it stayed hidden), Help & Support wouldn't work, neither would System restore, IE, no sound. Sound is the interesting one. The Realtek control panel shows that the rear speakers are working, but not the front ones; so, effectively, no sound (most sounds, like beeps, alerts, etc, come thru the front speakers.) I've spent 4 days trying to retrieve things and I'm STILL working on it. At least I can now post rewiews like this - get some of it off my chest!

Summary

I'm glad it works for Windows 7. DON'T use it with XP!!!

"A Dangerous program with extremely poor support."

December 02, 2011  |  By BillTR

 |  Version: AppCleaner 1.6.4297

Pros

None that I can see as it damaged the OS on my machine.
I tried this on a machine running Windows XP SP/3 which was patched up to date.
Now, to all intents and purposes, all I have is a 'brick'.

Cons

This program has damaged the OS on my machine in such a way as to make any attempt to troubleshoot it extremely difficult. After running it, I can no longer copy or move anything at all unless I do so from the command line. My Network Connections were wiped out and I cannot re-install them, even though the device manager 'sees' the NIC and says it is OK.
The Event Viewer loads and I can see events, but I cannot open any individual event to see any of the details.
System Restore no longer works, so I cannot restore to a previous save point. I backed up the registry before I used this software, but even restoring the registry does nothing to alleviate the problems.
I contacted the authors of this mess and they replied two or three times asking for information, which I provided. Then they simply ignored me.
It would appear that the only recourse I have is to completely wipe and reload the machine.

Summary

In no circumstances would I recommend that anyone even TRY to load this program. It's potential for damage to a users machine is immense and the company that spawned it is no help at all.
I strongly suspect that the users with positive reports are using Windows 7 or (shudder) Windows Vista.
I would like to point out that I am NOT a newbee, crying because I broke my machine. I am a professional in the IT industry with over 30 years experience at a professional technical level.
While it MAY be possible to eventually track down what this program did, it would take an inordinate amount of effort to do so. I have worked on the machine for over 16 hours now and am no further ahead than when I started. Most investigative tools simply do not work. SFC runs and says it corrected files, but there is no discernable improvement in the machine whatsoever.
The only reasonable recourse at this time is to completely wipe and reload the machine - an exercise that in itself will take two or three days to complete.
The Editors should AT THE LEAST, qualify their remarks to reflect the fact that this software may irreparably damage to OS on any machine running Windows XP and MAY have adverse effects on other operating systems as well.

"bugs-R-us !"

November 05, 2011  |  By blancheirving

 |  Version: AppCleaner 1.6.4297

Pros

Nice logo.

Cons

Although it produced no squawks, squeaks, or warnings of any kind, the software simply failed to clean anything listed in the Windows tab... I mean even the most minimal expectation - clearing the Recycle Bin - was left unmet Fail.

Summary

Basically did not perform the functions it was born to run.

"BEWARE if you run Windows XP !!!"

October 24, 2011  |  By PhilNic

 |  Version: AppCleaner 1.6.4297

Pros

None for me

Cons

This program completely messed up my Windows XP installation.
After running it on my PC nothing worked properly. Most programs refused to start, while some started then crashed.
Lost the ability to Drag n Drop or Copy/Paste
Backup software would not run, and neither would System Restore. AppCleaner itself would not run, so despite having used its feature to save settings before deleting anything, I could not run the program to undo the changes. Many services stopped running, and could not start again. All my printers had gone. Could not copy to external hard drive .... The list went on.
In the end I was forced to do a complete reinstall of Windows XP.

Summary

My PC is now cleaner than before. BUT only because after running this program, my PC was so messed up that I was forced to do a complete reformat of the Hard Drive and a reinstallation of Windows XP
