Publisher's Description
From SuperMagnus Software:
Word Counter is a Macintosh OS X application that performs a word count and a character count, but it can do much more. It can be used independently or in conjunction with other applications such as TextEdit, Microsoft Word, Pages, TextWrangler, and others.
Text can be typed, pasted, or dragged into the window. Word Counter can automatically update the count based on a user-defined time interval. It also can perform bulk counts on multiple files and folders simply by dropping them onto the window. Word Counter can count the number of times a particular word appears in a document. It can even create a sortable summary table of all words in the document, with the number of times each word appears and the length of each word.
Word Counter can handle various file types including plain text (txt, text), rich text (rtf, rtfd), Hypertext Markup Language (htm, html), Microsoft Word (doc), Microsoft Word XML (wordml), Apple's web archive (webarchive), and others. This program may be useful for writing a manuscript or an abstract with a strict limit on the number of words or characters allowed.
What's new in this version:
- Word Counter is now OS X 10.5 (Leopard) compatible
- When used with Pages Word Counter can now count all text or a subset of selected text
- Now works with SubEthaEdit and Text-Edit Plus
- Minor interface enhancements

"Doesn't Work in Real time"
Version: Word Counter 2.7
Cons
I need something to constantly tell me how many characters are in a box for filling out online forms. Often, as in the case of this form I'm filling out right now, they don't tell you how many you've typed in, but love to tell you when you've gone over the limit. I hate opening Word to do that.
This software makes you hit COUNT every time you want it to calculate which is a ridiculous oversight by the programmers.

"Does just what it's supposed to do! :)"
Version: Word Counter 1.5
Pros
I'm a recent convert to Mac OS from Windows. I haven't splashed out for a full blown word processor yet, but working on an OU course I needed a word count for my assignments.
Word Counter does just what I need it to as I work with TextEdit.
Cons
It's a bit of a bore having to drag, or copy/paste the text into word counter's text box.
That isn't really much of a reason to gripe about it though. As soon as the text is pasted into the window you have your word count at the push of a button.

"Highly accurate and FREE!"
Version: Word Counter 2.0
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
We tried this little gem in our department after using a Windows machine and PractiCount for years. Our workstations are Power Mac G5s running Tiger. This utility was more accurate than PractiCount, MS Word, and GoLive when compared to a hand count. It also works on HTML documents and will include data in tables, where the other counters seemed to ignore it. Beautiful, beautiful, and we no longer have to use Windoze to count words! Thank YOU!
