Vipre Antivirus and Antispyware requires Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista; it is not compatible with Windows 95, 98, or ME, Macintosh, or Linux. The 15-day free trial is fully functional; a review of the paid product can be found on CNET Reviews.

Installation takes a few minutes and does not require a reboot. After installation, a wizard asks a few predictable questions. Overall, the Vipre interface is one of the cleanest we've seen on any antivirus product. It's intuitive and easy to use. Four tabs across the top take you to Scan, Manage, Tools, and the overview page. Much of what we like about Vipre is beneath the hood--which is where it should be. Vipre scored well in both our CNET Labs' Windows XP performance tests, however, there are no public, third-party tests that we can point to at this time.

What we like most about Vipre, though, is that it packs a lot of extras--extras that other antivirus products should have but often do not, such as a secure file eraser that writes 1s and 0s over deleted files, a history cleaner that goes beyond just what's in your Internet-browser cache, and something called PC Explorer, which reveals processes and services running that are suspect or known to be malicious.

Many of these tools are also featured within Sunbelt Software's standalone-antispyware product, CounterSpy v2. Missing from Vipre is firewall protection. Sunbelt Software does not provide an uninstall function; you will need to use the Windows Control Panel's Add and Remove Software feature.

Version: Vipre Antivirus + Antispyware 3.1.2416

    "Best so far"

    by Eric65109 on October 11, 2009

Pros: Over the last 15 years we had McAfee, Norton, AVG and the free edition of Panda. Also had CW Shreader, Adware, Spybot and none ot them have worked as well as Vipre. We have three computers on this virus program and no problems for a 6 months.

    Cons: None so far

Summary: Great program and runs in the back ground with very little resources, not like all the other prograns that really slow down all three of our computers! Won't ever go back to the other programs. All the other have let in virus's and other spyware. ... read more >>

    "VIPRE is the Best"

    by jbwal27 on October 7, 2009

Pros: Low on system resources. Provides top of the line protection without putting a dent in your wallet. You will not find a better Technical Support Call Center.

Cons: It has allowed a few infections to slip through, but that is more my fault because I have downloaded and/or installed something from an untrustworthy source. I know better than to blame VIPRE. Hint, don't use P2P programs and avoid infections.

Summary: Many of the negative reviews on this site are from average PC users who already have heavily infected machines and blame VIPRE for not solving all of their problems. A real PC Tech knows that one program is not enough. As an I.T. Tech, I use VIPRE a... read more >>

    "It's just okay."

by windyplain on September 3, 2009

    Pros: It's a virus + antispyware rolled into 1.

Cons: I kept it updated, still got infected several tiimes, even though it ran at startup with High Active Protection + did scans regularly. It's not worth the money. It's a system resource hog on an old computer. Def. files are huge for manual update.

Summary: I use ClamWin now & am happier & use something else for malware.

    "Ineffective..Bleepingcomputer and Malwarebytes fixed it"

by arkarel on August 20, 2009

Pros: Quick response on telephone calls to Tech Support. American (easy to understand) tech support.

Cons: Ineffective. Finally I gave up and went to Bleepingcomputer.com. They told me how to stop the problem processes and told me to download and use Malwarebytes. Downloaded free. FIXED ALL PROBLEMS...I bought it!

Summary: INEFFECTIVE....located no problem files despite serious infections. I had a BAD redirection problem and "Total Security" malware which pretty much crippled my nice new Samsung netbook. I read good review in CNET and downloaded Counterspy. Tech th... read more >>
