"Happy with Federal return, but..."
Version: TaxACT 2012 Ultimate Bundle
Pros
Quick and easy to use for the Federal return. At $10, the price can't be beat. It covered everything I needed and made it easy to decide whether to take the std. deduction or itemize.
Cons
State was off. I file in two states; iit wouldn't let me report the numbers in the right places. Didn't account for limits to a contribution. Decided NOT to file the state form, it wanted to charge me anyway. Had to start the federal from scratch.
Summary
Use it for Federal, and do state by hand. State taxes are easy anyway.

"A far cry from Turbo Tax"

Not helpful or intuitive. Not for you if you have anything even slightly complex. The Q&A would not address some of my needs. Very difficult to review entries.
Summary
Back to Turbo Tax for me, it is well worth the extra $30 or so

Summary
Just follow and answer the step by step questions asked by TaxACT, and you'll finish up with completed federal and state returns. The TaxACT Ultimate Bundle (the deluxe federal plus a state return) is the best value and the best choice for taxpayers who need to file a state return in addition to the federal return.
Jessica Dolcourt commented in her CNET review of TaxACT that the online edition of TaxACT "kept us from cutting and pasting". I had no problem copying and pasting with the desktop edition of TaxACT.
However, if a taxpayer has a very complicated return (a lot of investment or real estate rental activity), the premium editions of TurboTax or H&R Block At Home may be a better choice.

"Good on federal, iffy on state"

Pros
Went to TaxACT in past years when it could run under Linux with wine. This year's does not, but (1) it was always as good as the main competition, both of which I'd used previously, and (2) now my data's in its format, and (3) the price is right.
Cons
There was a misinterpretation by TaxACT of Vermont's state instructions last year. I called the state to confirm, then contacted TaxACT, who claimed their interpretation was right anyway. Finally the state contacted them directly to get it corrected.
Summary
Past years' TaxACT packages have been straight forward, and not gotten in the way as much as the competition's. This year they've reportedly added more wiz-bang gimmicks (thus breaking wine compatibility for Linux). But I'm locked into their data format, and the price is still right. Their state prep, at least for Vermont, is cruder than their federal, and in the past contained a significant error for anyone with capital gains offsets. On the whole though it does a good job in a reasonable amount of time.

Pros
The price is right. Software installs easily, import's previous year's tax returns, and walks you through the interview process to make filing for even less-than-simple tax returns pretty easy. I even have a small business, and it makes that easy!
Cons
Rarely, more complicated topics (for instance, this year, the $8k first time home buyer credit) leave a bit to be desired on the documentation, but, this, again, is rare.
Summary
I file mine, my mom's, and generally 1 or more friends' tax returns each year with this software, since I first discovered TaxAct in 1999, and have NEVER had any major problems. The price is great, and the product is, too. I've used it for ten years, and will keep using it as long as the product stays as great as it is!

I have been using this program for approx. 5 years. The price can't be beat, and I've never encountered a problem that lacked advice, explanation, or that couldn't be solved.
Cons
I can't think of anything?

I plan to continue using this program in the future. If you sign up in December for the following year, you receive an even greater price ($13.95 for 2009), and are able to e-file both your federal and state returns @ no additional cost.

free edition is great for 1040 or 1040 EZ. With
both editions it is free to e-fileCons
None what so ever. Even if I tried I couldn't

a somewhat difficult taxes and the deluxe
covers all aspects of them. If you have a

I have used the paid desktop Deluxe federal and state version for many years and have never had a problem. My tax situation is not the most simple. I itemize deductions, have 5 children, and run a private business. Taxact handles it all. Great price compared to others. Importing of previous years data is a big plus. If you don't want to get stuck paying a higher price each year, I would recommend using this program.
