"Not as good as it used to be"
Version: Softi Scan to PDF 2.50
Pros
Originally did what it should
Cons
Multiple page scans from an auto-feeder hang the application - no response from the developer.
Summary
Used for a couple of years and and used it all the time, but now it fails on almost every scan. Tried re-installing, no joy - no response from the developer. Have now switched to Fast Scan to PDF - cheaper and works.

"suspicious download"
Version: Softi Scan to PDF 2.50
Pros
I don't recommend
Cons
When I tried to download it my protection software blocked it and gave several suspicious messages.

"Reliable with great compression"
Version: Softi Scan to PDF 2.50
Pros
Easy to use interface, can use my multi-function printer's autofeed tray, excellent compression (file size), can edit scan settings
Cons
None. Love this software.
Summary
This software has paid for itself - many times when I need to scan docs it is to transmit a signed copy of a document (flexible spending account claim forms, docs for lawyers, etc)via email. I use this software about 3x/month, and it was more when I was selling, then buying, a house. A superior time & money saver.
Update: Used this software from version 2.37 to current version updated in July 2012. I run this on a moderately equipped PC with Win7 Home Premium and use an all-in-one print/scan/fax/copy device with it - a Dell 962.

"Simple and effective"
Version: Softi Scan to PDF 2.50
Pros
I finally figured out how to make my old Canon N650U flatbed scanner work on my wife's Vista machine (even though Canon said it did not support Vista with that scanner.) But I needed an app to scan directly to PDF since the old Canon software left much to be desired. This software is easy to use, will scan multiple pages into a single PDF file if desired, and connects without issue to the scanner's TWAIN driver.
Cons
Documentation, while existing, leaves something to be desired. It was not intuitively clear how to scan multiple pages into a single file (you just don't press the 'Save PDF' button until all pages are scanned in.) Also, at $30, the software is pricey - but it does work. One other thing to be aware of: after you pay your money to get the license number, you have to download and install another version of the software, since you can't just plug the license number into the trial version.
Summary
This was the solution I was looking for. If it had been $10 cheaper, I'd have been happier. Oh well, no one made me buy it. Problem-free, so far, on this 32-bit Vista machine.

"Great for the Price"
Version: Softi Scan to PDF 2.50
Pros
Simple to use and install, works with a fairly old network scanner. Results compare with Acrobat in terms of legibility.
Cons
Image compression not as good as Acrobat, no OCR. For example, 846KB document w/OCR in Acrobat comes in a just over 1MB w/no OCR.
Summary
This won't take the place of Acrobat if you're serious about document scanning, but if you just need a simple solution to replace a fax machine, it's more than adequate, simple, and priced very well.
