Word processors work wonderfully, right up until the time you need to draw a diagram to illustrate your work. SmartDraw provides a handy shortcut for anyone in this situation, offering a plethora of diagram templates and art elements that eliminate the need to start from scratch.

A huge variety of possible uses has been included, from software engineering or business modeling to anatomical illustration. Generic templates include flowcharts, organizational charts, mind maps, family trees, ER diagrams, and far more. A clip-art collection helps fill out the basic templates, and a drag-and-drop tool lets users easily add frequently used symbol combinations. The program also functions as a standalone drawing tool, supporting free-hand drawing, image layers, text, and tables. Work can be saved in a number of formats including JPEG, PDF, HTML and AutoCAD Interchange.

As a fast illustration or business tool for someone who's not doing full-blown design work, we think this program functions extraordinarily well.

"Excellent program! Capable of way more than I need"

January 26, 2009  |  By mikeymoto

 |  Version: SmartDraw 2009 2009.7

Pros

Very easy to use and the end result is very professional. I have been able to design restaurant layouts with real life dimensions, verus the caveman sketches I use to create for my employees, designers, architects and GC's.

Cons

At first, because it's capable of so much, it takes me about 5 minutes to get myself on track. It truely does way more than I would ever need it for. (That's actually a good thing, I guess)

Summary

I am not a technical person at all, but after someone told me about this program, I tried it out and saved thousands on design, consultant and architectural costs. I use to spend a lot of money on color renderings of restaurant locations that I would present to investors. This program allows me to create the floorplan I want, in the actual restaurant footprint, with all the realistic dimensions. It also has been a savior in relaying my thoughts and ideas to designers and architects. Bravo, SmartDraw.

"Program is great for this engineering consultant"

January 26, 2009  |  By MikeSandidge

 |  Version: SmartDraw 2009 2009.7

Pros

Program is intuitive, quick and has 99% of the features you will need. The download and start up were super fast. It got me out of a Sunday evening pickle for a Monday morning Ghantt chart project planning presentation with ease. It's cool :))

Cons

That it possibly does not transfer into cell workable files when exported into Excel. Will check first with Smartdraw's great customer support folks to see if it is really the program or me :))

Summary

For value based features in one practicle multi- faceted program, this one is the bomb ...it rocks. A big Mahalo to Smartdraw :)).

"Overrated and not well tested by CNET"

January 23, 2009  |  By webistrator

 |  Version: SmartDraw 2009 2009.7

Pros

Based on the free (for only 7 days) download, it's probably very versatile with the many optional (many free) templates.

Cons

Many faults in the user interface, shortcut keys, help index, page layout, image and map import functions.

Summary

User interface: lack of harmony with established text editing/layout and MS shortcut key standards. You apparently can't position text in flowchart boxes (centered Hz/Vt only), and standard shortcuts cause different actions from those standard (eg, Ctrl+Alt+(arrow) to select text by fullword, etc.).

Help index: can't find "shortcut keys", "text positioning", "map zooming", "page (view)", and "image/insert" as examples. The "smarthelp", however, covers some of these under a separate structure that isn't cross-referenced in the help index.

Page layout: there is no page layout presentation mode without exporting the diagram to Word to see what a page will look like.

The Google map function is a disaster (no scaled zoom function, and if you zoom in too much the map function dies with constant error messages). I find it hard to believe that Google would release such a thing. Why include a poor map importing function without adequate testing??

Updated on Jan 23, 2009

As a postscript, I want to state my purpose in trying SmartDraw. I am looking for software to diagram the 9th-12th cent. Nordic/Icelandic family relationships pictorially to augment an index database that I'm making of that literature. To do this I chose SmartDraw for its flow/family tree diagramming that also allows image (map location) importing as well as hot linking to/from the index entries built with another Word/Office-compatible tool called Sky (excellent index tool!). I'm NOT using SmartDraw to do conventional org./process flowcharting. But I'd hoped it would offer the functionality I need. Based on the marketing hype, it should have.

"A Great Product for Everyone!"

January 06, 2009  |  By Superjunto

 |  Version: SmartDraw 2009 2009.7

Pros

This release is definitely much easier to use. For those with less experience the tutorials are extremely helpful and makes learning the different templates/tools/options easier. The ease of importing to Excel and PowerPoint is a huge plus!

Cons

The only real con that I see at this point is that this great program does not currently operate in a Mac environment.

Summary

Again, this product has so much depth and has so many templates that it is indeed a tool for just about everyone in every environment. A definite must have!!!

"Worst piece of crap i've ever purchased"

January 06, 2009  |  By rrr888

 |  Version: SmartDraw 2009 2009.7

Pros

Can't think of any

Cons

Well everything seems to be in order and it's a great program. Just one minor detail: it doesn't work. It doesnt't copy stuff from excell but gives an error, and it crashes every other second. I'll demand my money back.

Summary

Avoid it.

"Still the best software for fast results o high quality"

January 06, 2009  |  By Michael Schwarz

 |  Version: SmartDraw 2009 2009.7

Pros

The new power point export feature is really great! And a lot of new templates and symbols are added.

Cons

There is still a minor problem (for me) with the org chart template: once you have disconnected a box from the rest of the org chart there is no way to reconnect it to the org structure.

Summary

My company is entering the US market this year ( I hope, we do) therefore we had to do a lot of organizational work and we have to prepare a lot of presentations for the prospected customers.
So the 2009 version of Smartdraw is the perfect support for this project. As with earlier versions you can create impressive diagrams, flow charts or org charts within minutes. In the new version some templates and symbols were added which perfectly meet my requirements:
1. There is a new group of templates called "strategic planning" which contains all basic structures to build up a new business organisation.
2. There are a lot of new symbols concerning waste water treatment, what's in parts exactly my business. Together with the piping&instrumentation symbols I have no problems to sketch a layout of a even complex plant in short time.

The absolut best feature is the possibility of creating animated diagrams which can be exported directly to power point and they are exported together with the animations!! That's a very practical and time saving procedure!

The only negative point on the first sight is the somewhat tricky handling of boxes in an org chart:
Once you have disconnected a box from the rest of the org chart there is no way to reconnect it to the org structure.
You can connect it with a "normal" line but I didn't find a way yet to get the "smart" connector back. The advantage of a "smart" connector is the possibility to hide substructures. The only work-around for this problem is to create a new box and copy&paste the content of the disconnected one. Maybe it's an RTFM problem.

An additional problem I found: the last box of an org chart can't be changed in his position. If you do so the box is disconnected and then you have the problem described above. All you can do is add a new box below; with the new box the connection line gets a new control point which can be used to change the position of both boxes. After that you can delete the unnecessary box.

On the other hand another bug is gone:

Creating an org chart from a csv file resulted in displaced boxes in the org chart if there were more than 5 rows per box defined. This bug is fixed now.

Conclusion:

I recommend downloading the trial version to check the new templates and symbols; the chance that you'll find exactly what you need is really good.
And you should try the export function for power point. Thats a powerful argument for the software especially if you have to create ambitious presentations in short time. With the large number of symbols and templates and the animation feature even complex technical facts can be explained easily.

Try it!

"Must have software for your toolkit ..."

November 07, 2008  |  By srlevine1

 |  Version: SmartDraw 2009 2009.7

Pros

Easy Installation
Intuitive Commands
Immediately productive after install

Cons

Would like availability of more third-party templates.
Cannot reverse engineer databases and perform some of the technological tricks that Visio's top editions can perform.

Summary

After years of using Microsoft's Viso, I found that SmartDraw was easier to use and made me instantly productive after the install. I have been producing cost-effective presentation-quality graphics without the need for an expensive graphics designer. In addition, many of the templates that are included with the product helped to stimulate and clarify my thinking. I was able to produce a wider-range of materials quickly and easily. Materials which I may have never produced if it were not for SmartDraw's ease of use.

I highly and enthusiastically recommend this product to everyone: from a one man consultancy to those who run large-scale operations. To me, SmartDraw is more cost-effective and useful out-of-the-box than the more bloated Visio with its expanded learning curve.

"Excellent product!"

November 06, 2008  |  By Ar-Ex

 |  Version: SmartDraw 2009 2009.7

Pros

Using the Medical Version for post-secondary students and professors, the quality of in-class work and content of Power Point presentations sky-rocketed. Also, GREAT after sales service from the company's regular newsletter.

Cons

We all love the product. Period!

Summary

It would be nice to edit the drawings while in the target application, instead of reverting to the original SmartDraw drawing and the re-exporting the image.
Otherwise, functionality is very good.

"SmartDraw is hands down the best diagramming tool"

October 30, 2008  |  By eddie360

 |  Version: SmartDraw 2009 2009.7

Pros

It's easy, fast, hardly a learning curve. In minutes you're up and running and creating professional looking charts and graphs. No hunting around or freestyle drawing. It helps us stay on task and makes us look more professional externally.

Cons

Nothing. It does everything my company needs for it to do and a lot more.

Summary

For everything you get in it -- so so many templates, graphs, examples, it's silly not to buy it. Once you work with it you'll wonder how you got along without it.
