CNET Editors' review
When does a "printer" require no ink or paper? When it's printing to a file. PaperlessPrinter installs as a printer and outputs documents as PDF, HTML, JPEG, BMP, or RTF files, but not, unfortunately, as TIFF files. We were generally satisfied with the program's output quality and conversion speed, but when we tried converting to RTF and HTML, it added random spaces all over the document. We wouldn't recommend PaperlessPrinter for offices, but its freeware price makes it a decent choice for occasional or one-off use.Publisher's Description
From Rarefind Engineering Innovations:
This program allows you to convert printable documents to PDF, HTML, RTF, Excel, JPEG, and BMP formats. You can convert documents to any of these formats and preserve the look and content of the original document, complete with fonts and graphics. PaperlessPrinter is a 100 percent software product. It has no hardware parts. It does not consume paper or ink. PaperlessPrinter appears like a normal printer on a Windows PC. You can actually see the PaperlessPrinter object in the Printers folder.
Using an application's Print command you can print anything to this printer. Instead of printing on paper, PaperlessPrinter creates content in PDF, HTML, RTF, Excel, JPEG, or BMP. Version 3 includes unspecified updates.

"very useful programme"
Version: PaperlessPrinter 3
Pros
I write music in a composition programme, and I can then print it using paperless printer as a jpeg, enabling me to cut and paste, etc, arranging the music just as I like.
Cons
I found that the jpegs wouldn't open in my normal editing suite, but if I dragged them into Microsoft Paint and resaved them, then they became recognisable in my normal suite afterwards, so a slightly cumbersome programme.
Summary
For a freebie, I find it very useful

"Distortions occur in complex conversions"
Version: PaperlessPrinter 3
Pros
Installation was smooth. User interface is pleasant, except that a few too many windows pop up. This program functions at the printer driver layer, so you print to the program, and then save the results in another format. Neat concept. Simple PDFs produce good results in HTML. Uninstallation was clean and hassle-free.
Cons
When I try to convert a complex PDF, with text aligned at different angles and using different fonts, the resulting HTML file doesn't look anything like my original PDF. All of the information is there, but the text that was vertical in my original PDF is horizontal, overlapping, stretched, wrong font, wrong typeface, or otherwise distorted. Also, this program leaves behind two spurious files after conversion, Fontmaker.exe and ZTR9.tmp. When you rename the HTML file and its associated folder, you corrupt the file and render it unusable. This shouldn't happen.

"Useless"
Version: PaperlessPrinter 3
Cons
Tried to convert a .pdf with rows of data in landscape format to Excel; it created a blank .xls file. Convert to .rtf, it creates a .doc file with each line as an image (not data)! Convert to html, each page is an image. Useless for converting .pdf to data! Wasted over an hour on this.

"Download it."
Version: PaperlessPrinter 3
Pros
No water marks or registration links on document. PDF creation works well.
Cons
Registration reminder will pop up after creating each document. Fair enough for a free product.

"Very Pleased"
Version: PaperlessPrinter 3
Pros
So far I've only tried sending output to Excel. Table data in the original PDF file was handled perfectly and the resulting spreadsheet was formatted with all data elements in separate cells, with rows and columns alligned correctly.
As the publisher's description says, the program is free for non-comercial use. Each time you print to the paperlessprinter device you get a popup asking if you would like to register. Clicking Cancel closes the popup. I don't have any problem with this and the program seems to be fully functional, with no limitations. Definitely worth trying.
Cons
I installed on Windows 2000. When the install completed, I found that all the previously installed printers in my printers folder were missing. A paperlessprinter device didn't get created in the printers folder either. I uninstalled the PaperlessPrinter program and reinstalled it. After the second install all my printer devices as well as the new paperlessprinter device showed up in my printers folder.

"Easy and accurate pdf to word conversion"
Version: PaperlessPrinter 3
Pros
I converted several pdf documents to word documents so I could edit them, and was impressed by the accuracy of the conversion. The only thing that came out really odd was some 'special effects' graphics
Cons
As it's a 'trial' version, it reminds you every time you use it -- but that is not a big thing.
