Palm Desktop is the desktop companion software all devices made by Palm Inc. It allows users to view, sort, find, edit, back up, and add anything to your Palm OS handheld. Feautures include an intuitive user interface, useful new views, and time-saving features, such as a Hide/Show/Mask Records function and a resizeable memo window. Additionally, it also includes improved security, and new ways to share, send, and receive appointments and address book information. Palm Desktop is for use with all Palm devices, for users with PCs running Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000. This updated interface is new and improved with many features. You may now synchronize via Infrared under Windows 2000 (using HotSync Manager 3.1.2H). This version also silently incorporates the USB Registry Cleaner utility. It is recommended that all users of Palm Desktop 4.0.1 for Windows download and install the Updater for HotSync 3.1.2H for Windows.
Note: Some Windows 98/NT 4.0 users may experience problems with the self-extracting file, and should consider downloading the regular .ZIP file.

Summary
I installed this replacing a 3rd party desktop (Franklin Covey 7.6.3) The install went smoothly, following the directions for such install.
The integration of features - address book, datebook, Palm install (and free add-on PDAConverter) is excellent, bordering intuitive.
Switching between views has a learning curve, albeit a short one. It just takes a little practice.
I've added in Desktop Themes, which asthetically enhances the program. -

Desktop 4.0 does some weird stuff, particularly when you turn off the toolbar in the preferences and change views from Week to Month or Day. The bottom of the window drops off the screen and if you've moved the window up to cover the desktop (where the toolbar used to be) it automatically pops back down.
And that's not the only problem! The terrific software, Desktop To Go (which now comes bundeled with Palms) won't work with 4.0!! They won't be coming out with an upgrade until Fall of '02!
It is a pain to go back to 2.6.3 once you've upgraded, partly because part of the installation affects the palm itself. My adviceÑcheck it out on another computer besides the one you normally sync on.
