CNET Editors' review
PDF-XChange Viewer presents users with an alternative to Adobe's Acrobat Reader. With some interesting additions, it's not hard to see this reader gaining some fans over its more popular competition.
The program's interface looks and feels remarkably like Acrobat Reader, but with more command icons along the top. Users who are familiar with viewing PDFs will find this fairly intuitive, but newcomers are advised to experiment with the options and pay attention to the Help file. Viewing PDFs is incredibly simple and should not be a problem for users. The documents look good through the reader and are easily navigated. While the program is good for simply looking at PDFs, it excels with its added features. The control panel along the top displays a long list of options for editing your PDFs. The most useful we found was the option for making bright red shapes and lines, which can be utilized to mark errors and make comments (an element that has always been one of Acrobat's best tools). Here, XChange Viewer gives users more options than its competition, allowing for more in-depth markups.
This free program imitates its competition in all the right places and gives users some extra features where it counts, combining into an excellent download option for anyone looking for an alternative to Acrobat Reader.

"Couldn't even open a 1 page PDF created with Adobe."
Version: PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5.200
Pros
None if it can't open a one page PDF created with Adobe. Since most PDF's are created with Adobe, I would prefer that any other PDF reader and or writer I install, to be able to open, read and print out ANY PDF's
created with Adobe. I had a pair of comp tickets emailed to me for a show at the Javits Center that I couldn't open and print out.Cons
I had previously uninstalled Adobe Reader with RevoUninstaller to reclaim more hard disk space on my 20 GBHD Windows XP, Dell Laptop. I had only downloaded PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5.200 because it said it was ab 43MB. In reality, it used 65MB for it's smaller package - with only the ability to open and read but not write pdf's, so that I could simply open and print a pair of comp tickets that were emailed to me. Installed and tried to open the ticket's pdf file, which was created with Adobe Reader. Got a response: "~Cannot open these kinds of files." Plus parts of it's user aggreement sound like you're giving them permission to load their malware on your computer, so immediately uninstalled it with RevoUninstaller, then decided to do a complete System Restore while I still had restore points available, from before I downloaded PDF-XChange Viewer 2remove every bit, then re-downloaded Adobe ReaderX, which was only 65MB for the whole program and has the ability to open, read and write pdf's.
Summary
Download Adobe ReaderX latest version instead. It auto updates and everything. However, the memory space the program takes up on your hard drive will increase immensely over time, compared to the amount of hard disk space the current version program takes up if downloaded for the first time, because the auto-updates, as with most software company's self-initiated or auto-updates, only add stuff, without erasing parts of the program that have been changed and are no longer needed. Therefore, in order to keep your computer cleaned of superfluous unused software that slows down the cpu and fills up the hard drive, it and most programs need to be uninstalled and cleaned with a program like RevoUninstaller that allows you to remove the thousands of extra files, folders and registry entries the program's own un-installers leave behind, and then permanently erase all things you've erased on your computer with a separate TOOL, freeing up hard disk space. THEN you download and install fresh, the latest version. You can check before and after in program files and in and with the disk defragmenter to prove how much smaller the program MB's are and how much hard disk space you've recovered, respectively.

""So Much More Than Just A Viewer - This Does The Lot""
Version: PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5.200
Pros
- Feature Rich Viewer that offers Infinite Customisation
- Editing Tools to satisfy the most demanding of persons and which include Stamps, Sticky Notes, Highlightsing, Text Tool, Underline, Cross-Out Tool, Eraser .....
- Aditional features include Bookmarks, Tabs, URL Links, Attachments, Import/Export Comments, Multiple Print Functions, Password Security, Insert/Extract/Delete Pages, OCR, emailing files .....
- IT HAS IT ALL.Cons
- A 200 page Help function is heavy reading, and could benefit from downsizing to eliminate the extensive repetition & make it easier to find what you are actually looking for.
- Cannot think of any additional feature that I would like to see apart from encryption.Summary
Switched from Adobe to Foxit to reduce the demand on PC resouces and the "clumsy" approach used by Adobe. Foxit was better (lighter), but is now also becoming bloated and putting too much time into security rather than editing features.
Have been using XChange viewer (poor name, doesn't state what it does) for 2+ years now and cannot believe what I am getting for FREE.
Reading the "Preferences" and "Toolbar Customisation" help features will quickly let you exchange the cluttered feel fo the default GUI for a cleaner, lighter one. After that, most of the mark up and commenting tools are intuitive, but you may need to revisit the help function to establish how to customise some of them (TIP:- Right click on chosen tool, then left click Properties, then experiment). The extensive tools menu includes Yellow Sticky Notes, Text box, Call-out, Text Highlighting, Text Cross-out, Text Underline, and much more. Choose from 14 Stamps (Approved, Draft etc) plus you can create your own (including your own signature) from any image, PDF or the clipboard. The zoom function will satisfy the most myopic of persons (including me).
Multiple print options let you produce brochures or books, with an auto-rotate feature to let you fit a Landscape onto a Portrait paper size, but be careful to check your selected print option if your mark-ups don't show.
I love the Tabs facilities which let you go to another page in your PDF, or elsewhere on the same page. You can also create tabs to open a web link, or another file.
90%+ of the PRO features - Insert/Extract/Delete Pages, Rotate, Digitally Sign - are available in the Free version but come at a price - you must accept the DEMO watermarks although imaginative users can find ways around this. If, for example, you just want to merge PDF's - then download PDF Redirect where this feature comes free of charge without watermarks.
There are many, many more rich features to use and enjoy in this software. You will never look for another PDF viewer/editor. -
