"You will still have to purchase Power Point"

November 30, 2006  |  By nedrland

 |  Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4

Pros

I'm a casual computer user and don't usually put a lot of demands on the advanced features of software. I've had Open Office for several months using it mostly for word processing and a bit of inventory. It easily converted all of my old MS files and I've been very pleased with Open Office. It costs you nothing but is much more powerful than MS Works "economy" software.

Cons

Open Office has met all of my needs until I tried the presentations feature. I make presentations only infrequently and have used Power Point in the past. I never tried anything fancy but found Power Point quite easy to use. No so with Open Office and the help files didn't solve my problems. Power Point is more flexible and intuitive. I'll continue to use Open Office for most applications, but will go to MS Power Point to create presentations.

"No Contest"

November 20, 2006  |  By Stefan.

 |  Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4

Pros

It's free, as opposed to MS Office. You can download as many components as you want (not all or nothing). Any document made in Open Office can be saved as Word Document. Why pay hundreds of dollars for something when you can get something that's just as good for free?

"Infinately improved."

November 14, 2006  |  By lord_raphio

 |  Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4

Pros

This is a product that has finally come into its own. This product has gone from an interesting experiment to a free replacement of that which was once so necessary yet expensive. I actually found most of the features to be more intuitive than MS Office, the current leader of this pack.

Cons

It's not really relevant here on the PC side, but the Mac version could still stand for some love. Using it there is a bit awkward. But here in the PC world, it's golden.

"Solid replacement for MS Office"

November 11, 2006  |  By Conficio

 |  Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4

Pros

It reads and writes almost all MS Office documents I ever have thrown at it. And even better their internal file format, OpenDocument format (ODF), is approved as international standard ISO/IEC 26300. This is important if you want to keep your document longer than the maker of your software is around.

Cons

It's sometimes a bit slow, especially at start up (correction with 2.0.4 start-up is really fast) and when handling large documents (on machines with not too much memory).

"Great office suite for free."

November 09, 2006  |  By HuDu

 |  Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4

Pros

MS Office is good software, but it's expensive, and the license allows you to use it on one PC. OpenOffice is also good, but you can use it on as many PCs as you want, wherever you want, for whatever you want. Personal, business, or school use, it doesn't matter.

And it's free.

Not only that, OpenOffice does some things MS Office won't do, like save files in OpenDocument formats and export to PDF.

I've used OOo for legal documents, some fairly involved financial spreadsheets, and even manuscripts with recorded changes and version tracking. It has handled every task flawlessly. I often share files with MS Office users, and to date have had no trouble opening their files, and vice versa.

I can't see myself spending another dime on office software when OOo is this good for free.

Cons

Big download for those without broadband.

"WOW!!!!!!"

November 08, 2006  |  By ghostboy005

 |  Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4

Pros

Think about this. Why should you as the consumer be forced to pay a hundred odd dollar licensing fee for a program that needs constant updating from a major corporatiion (COUGH: microsoft) when you can download the same exact thing for free. OpenOffice has all of the same apps as MSO and without the added problems of licensing etc. I like the added tools that OpenOffice has packed with their system.

Cons

If your not used to OpenOffice, it takes a little while to get used to, however it is a great program.

Pros

this suite is all any home user will need. as i said in a past review, the editor in chief of maximum pc used this exclusively for some time.(not sure if he still does). it is stable, and has what i believe to be a fairly quick learning curve. it's truly a fantastic program.

Cons

"Very good alternative to MS Office"

November 06, 2006  |  By carlos0303

 |  Version: OpenOffice.org 2.0.4

Pros

For basic and moderately advanced users this program works much better than MS Off. It is more stable, especially when adding graphics and other things to a text file. Any graphics(photo, clip, etc) will remain where you placed it, while in Words they tend to move recklessly all the time.

It offers a large number of fonts. IT can save and handle many formats, and there is a Mac version,so those like me who work in both platforms are happy!!!! The Mac version saves in PDF format much better than Word. (yes, MSWord for Mac can save in PDF but sometimes it works badly.

In windows, files created with OOO are smaller than with MS Off. The spreadsheet does a good job for very basic use, but wonÂ?t handle properly Excel files with many spreadsheets. Its presentation program works well but learning how to use it requires a little longer than Powerpoint

Cons

The interface looks old. MS Off is more appealing. It does not include a email client. For advanced users, its calc falls short compared with Excel. Its database is difficult to use, it works pretty much like DBase. Access is much better. The worst thing is its spelling feature. Unless you use the English default, to change language it is a pain, a real and frustrating pain.

It lacks support and does not include templates or wizards, but that is due to the fact of being a "community" developed software, so there is not professional staff working for this software in a $$$$ basis.
