CNET editors' review

Reviewed by: CNET Staff

An increasingly credible rival to MS Office, OpenOffice.org includes powerful applications for making text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, diagrams, and databases, as well as HTML and XML documents. Not only does it let you edit basic documents, such as letters and faxes, it also handles complex and multipart documents with bibliographies, reference tables, and indexes.

The interface is similar to that of MS Office users, and even advanced Office users will find almost everything they're used to: templates, collaborative features (versions, recording changes), macros, and even a programming language. OpenOffice.org lets you open and save documents in formats as diverse as MS Office, PDF, HTML, and XML. However, it normally saves files in the open-standard Oasis OpenDocument XML format, for maximum compatibility with other applications. We were pleased to find that stability has improved too. No doubt about it, OpenOffice.org is a compelling option for anyone in search of an alternative office suite.

"Hey, at least this is a decent free alternative to MS Office...unlike MSWorks."

by CableguyTK on February 8, 2006

    Pros: Its free.

It provides users with all the same programs that MS Office provides...Excel features, Word Features, PowerPoint features, etc.

Excel and Word are in one program from what I recall.

It works with all MS Office created files.

Its an office suite that is constant over all operating systems...Windows, Mac and Linux. The same can NOT be said for MS Office. For Windows its MS Office 97, for Mac its Office 98. Windows - Office 2000, Mac Office 2001. Windows - Office XP, Mac - Office X. Windows - Office 2003, Mac - Office 2004. Linux/Unix - no versions. OpenOffice: Mac, Windows, Linux/Unix - all verison 2.0.1 :).

Cons: Its not AS functional as MS Office.

MS Office has more features and the files output are more robust than what is output from OpenOffice.org.

    "Better Than Microsoft Office"

    by Mike98 on February 22, 2006

Pros: These 6 office programs included Writer (like Word) are better than Microsoft 2000 for my Windows XP SP2, because I don't get jams from Calc (like Excel), are more up to date and are to operate almost the same as Microsoft Office. You can read Word documents in Writer, but not the other way round and have to download spelling separate. Easy to install and uninstall.

Cons: I miss a substitute for Microsoft Frontpage in OpenOffice. Now I have PageBreeze FREE HTML EDitor.

    "HAS EVERYTHING - COSTS NOTHING!"

by KiwiGeek on March 7, 2006

Pros: I don't use an office suite regularly enough to justify the cost of MS Office. At the same time I found home office type products or other free word processors just too lacking in features or overall compatibility. The download size was daunting with our slow dial up but now I wouldn't be without Open Office. Latest versions are coming out with more exciting features and functionality all the time.

Very flexible, powerful and easily configured to suit individual requirements.

A big package but not all modules have to be installed. You can just instal the ones you need, which saves a lot of disk space.
