"Great for 1 computer - not for monitoring a network"

October 23, 2014  |  By schneidler

 |  Version: NetWorx 5.3.2

Uses little memory
Does what it claims

cannot measure network usage by IP or MAC address

This is a great tool for monitoring exactly how much data you are using on a given machine. But not a good tool for monitoring the usage of each device on a network unless they all happen to be windows computers running networx. I have satellite internet and we are limited to 425 mb per day and this is shared by 7 adults. We go over the limit from time and time and everyone denies it was them so I've been looking for a tool to identify the usage of every device on the network, by IP or MAC addresss. This is a great piece of free software with no ads or lame "trial periods" but it doesn't do what I hoped. Quoting from the makers of the software, from this URL (

"Monitoring of multiple computers

NetWorx can only monitor traffic on the computer where it is installed. If you want to monitor traffic on multiple computers, you basically have two options:

Install NetWorx on every computer in your network. This can only be done if all your computers are running Windows. While NetWorx can only monitor traffic on the computer it is installed on, the instances of NetWorx can talk to each other so that each instance is synchronised and shows the actual overall usage. In this case, devices like iPads, Smart TV or mobile phones will not be metered. This synchronisation needs to be turned on in the advanced settings.
If your router supports so-called SNMP or UPnP protocol, you can monitor all traffic via your router. This however will not give you a per-device usage breakdown and the monitoring computer must be continuously on to poll the router and collect usage data. See the Router Monitoring page for more details."

I'm left wondering why all modern routers don't have this as a standard option in the router interface. Seems like fairly standard info most people would want to have. "Oh look, has used my entire daily allotment in the last half hour - what is going on??"
