Publisher's Description
From McAfee:
McAfee Labs Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations.
What's new in this version: Version 11.0.0.224 enhanced detections to cover new variants, optimize performance, and correct incorrect identifications.

"Works well but only removes some malware"
Version: McAfee Labs Stinger 10.2.0.870
Pros
Pretty good. Hasn't failed a job yet
Cons
Only scans for certain malware
Summary
While being good at finding and fixing the malware it knows about. There is certain malware it doesnt scan for. For the people who had their computer restart over and over again, this is a false positive that was resolved. To fix this, you will need to go to ubcd4win.com. Once you are there, create a boot disk, boot your computer to the boot disk. Then find a clean copy of svchost.exe and place it in the system32 folder. This should fix your issue.

"Finishes off any viruses"
Version: McAfee Labs Stinger 10.2.0.530
Pros
Really effective tool for removing viruses.
Cons
It maybe small in size but its great.
Summary
Its effective, I had a computer at home that doesnt have internet, when it catched a virus from a usb it took me weeks to get rid of it, but when I tried stinger, it really did it's job. After scanning, the virus is gone, now my brother can play his favorite games again in that computer. Thank you Mcafee..

"Warning - Do NOT install!"
Version: McAfee Labs Stinger 10.2.0.452
Pros
Easy to download
Cons
Computer shut down and was warned to remove program immediately.
Summary
I had used earlier editions with good results. On the first attempt to use this edition, my computer shut down and instructed me to remove progran immediately or suffer damage to my computer. After four days work I am finally able to use my computer but there is damage to my windows program. This is a new computer but use WindowsXP & Norton to be interchangeable with other computers in company. BEWARE!

"One Task Protection Support"
Version: McAfee Labs Stinger 10.2.0.310
Pros
It is a small download works in background and does not interfere with other tasks while cranking away. It has a specific mission and just tends to it. I have used them for some time and , i guess, mostly get peace of mind
It is free, hasnt hurt or interfered and has the potential to root out problems in the bud, i thinkCons
No real cons but it has to be updated manually (I have cnet notification so not really much of a chore since i know each new release shortly after release)
It does take a long time to run seems to use sys ram (which i have an overload anyway)Summary
This is only for certain specific problems and is meant as a supplement, and if i read it correctly, for systems with know or suspected problems. I have run it even though i have a pretty solid and trouble free system, so far. I have Mcafee total suites since i built my computers and all have been fine. so, this is only in use because it is available and it is free. i have not seen any problems identified by this particular tool. I used it because of the constant vigilance peddled by all the virus protection companies and hacker alerts plastered all over the net. I have been lucky in that i do not get much trouble, so far, so i was mostly motivated through fear of intrusion from my limited browsing needs. I could probably have done just as well if i never ran it. Among all the other 'must have' tools , in addition to the Mcafee total protection, i am puzzled why i actually needed to go chase this one down (stinger) if i already have "Total Protection"?
I havent gotten an answer, i get my cable internet provider's free mcafee suite updated at least daily , if not a couple of times a day, i am just not sure why this isnt included, since it is such an unobtrusive little thing anyway. Just a thought.
