McAfee has gone and done something drastic for the 2010 version of its basic security program, and we're not talking about the new name. McAfee AntiVirus Plus, which last year was known as McAfee VirusScan Plus, has a new interface that redefines how to streamline the complex and varied tools currently available in A-list security programs.
The the new and unusual top-down design is surprisingly easy to use, with clear delineations between features. Potentially confusing names have been jettisoned. For example, firewall settings control how you access the Web, so they're listed under Web and E-mail Protection. Also, McAfee stands out for not only color-coding what your status is, but also adding in what that means. The "Your computer is secure" message is bolstered by "No action required," a helpful tip. Click on any of the four categories just below the status bar and the pane just to the right reveals links to drill deeper into your security status. Mouse over the big subcategories at the bottom and a general status message appears next to the name. Click on one to for more configuration settings.
The biggest feature update comes to McAfee's real-time defense engine, called Artemis. In the 2010 version, it works in conjunction with McAfee's SiteAdvisor to scan downloads as they occur. The scans include using real-time URL, IP address, and domain name data in conjunction with a blend of blacklists, whitelists, and cloud analysis to evaluate downloads for threats before they land on your hard drive. According to McAfee, its 2010 suite has huge leaps in performance, due in part to selective process loading when you boot, and in part to flagging already-examined files as safe. Overall, we found McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2010 to be a much-needed and long-overdue improvement to McAfee's consumer protection line.

"Doesn't work properly"
Pros: Interface looks good, but that's about it. I've had McAfee for years and they upgraded me to the 2010 version and I started having lots of problems. Forget about tech support. It doesn't exist.
Cons: It gives you a memory write error at shutdown and the scheduled scans do not run at the time they''re supposed to.
Summary: My subscription expires in July, and believe me, I'm going to switch to something else!

"Quit using McAfee after 15 years"
Pros: None with the 2010 product
Cons: No Product control, memory hog, non-responsive, computer hung up on boot. No tech solutions to fix problems. Removed my printer drivers on uninstall.
Summary: I had a 6 user license, however I have uninstalled program on all computers. When McAfee security center updated to Security Center 2010 the program kept crashing, running slow, and would hang up on boot. Contacted McAfee and they attempted a remote fix which failed. The tech support had no solution to the problem. I will miss the old McAfee, but due to the worsening of their program, I had to move on.

"Pathetic support, false positives"
Pros: It installs well. In fact , you should use a registry checker after you un-install it. For It does not un-install well.
Cons: It throws false positives on nationally known dvd's. And It's customer support can't handle eliminating them. Frankly, they don't know what a false positive is???They funnel you to a fee based service when their program fails miserably.
Summary: Only thing going for them is that they are pre-installed on PC's. Control of programs is close to absent. False positives on nationally known software. They dumbed down security to where they have the control and profit when they fail. The export of their support does not thrill me as well. You sell your product here, then support it here.

"The new version is terrible."
Pros: Cheap product
Cons: Functionality poor.
Online backups now only via online backup.
Can only use product in licence period.
Poor quality control on dat releases killing users machines.Summary: The interface is too wordy and one has to look all over the place to find the functionality required.
The backup ************ os now only via an online backup. I am not sending my data anywhere other than my own drive thanks!
My licence expired and all functionality gets locked out. I dont mind paying for a product and subscibing to the updates but dont interupt my ability to access firewall controls or run the antivirus on my last dat download.
Given the above and the dat download which knocked thousands of users out of their machines I am switching to Kaspersky. Its a little more expensive but the reviews and functionality look great. -

"Terrible support, no control over product."
Pros: hmmmmmmmmmmm
Cons: Won't let you monitor your kids with spy-ware even after you try to get the McAfee software to accept the program. Support team has no clue
Summary: I try to monitor my kids actions on the internet. So I downloaded Ultimate Keylogger Free from CNET. The program worked for awhile until a McAfee update came in 2 months later It would not accept the program and said that the dll file was a Trojan. To Talk to a support team member cost money after 30 days. So I did the online-chat thing with McAfee. They told me if the McAfee software caught it as a trojan then it was a trojan; then when on to say that they have software to prevent my children from doing certain things on the internet (how convenient is that, more money for McAfee). Once I told them where I downloaded the spy-ware from (CNET) they wanted to solve the issue. I was promised that in 3 days they would solve the issue (and I mean promised) Well 7 days later I get an email from McAfee wanting to contact me to discuss the matter further. I told them that they had there 3 days to resolve the issue and I was now going with either AVAST Or AVG anti-virus software. McAfee is in the business to make money (and there is nothing wrong with that) but they forget who it is that is getting them rich and they are letting their arrogance get in the way of what is important.

"I do not recommend McAfee"
Pros: I can't think of any its been the worst experience with their product.
Cons: It turns off my firewalls a lot. Then you can not uninstall it when it stops working which is all the time. You have to do the tech support over your computer and have them remove it. Then down load it again from the online site. I do this non stop.
Summary: It scans and says there is no virus. But I am starting to think it is wrong about its scan saying there is no threats.DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! Save your money for something better this is really tossing it into the toilet and flushing it away.

"AV is OK, Don't bother with FW or Tech Support"
Pros: Has a decent Antivirus but that's about it
Cons: Firewall wants to give internet browsers full ability to accept unsolicited incoming connections and is not nearly as configurable as previous versions. You may as well be talking to a rock when it comes to trying to explain the problem to support
Summary: I used to like McAfee, but given that they want all programs to be able to accept unsolicited incoming connections (making the firewall about as useless as a waterproof jacket when you are scuba diving), I will likely go with a competing product such as Kaspersky or Bit Defender

"Conflicts with other programs"
Pros: Had it for over 5 years and had no serious virus.
Cons: They keep sending" You computer is not protected." messages so you have to log in the program again and again. I have a subscription so why?? Had conflicts with several of my other programs that I run from time to time, per their tech's say so.
Summary: Used to run Norton but changed to MacAfee on a friend's advice. Have used it over 5 years but will not renew. I think I can do better.
