"New users should be very very careful"
Version: MYOB AccountEdge 2004 2008
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have used this software for many years. It has several strengths.
BUT if you do not belong to MYOB's own network of accountants, you should be very careful for two reasons before buying it. First that the upgrade costs and policies of MYOB are worse than almost any other company or developer. Second that completely on a random basis this software will seek to verify your registration with its website. Apart from being an intrusive, annoying invasion of privacy, I don't know what data about you it sends to MYOB or what it would do if you did not have the internet connection just at time the software wanted to check your licence. Would you loose all your data or continue your work if you can not establish contact with MYOB over a week end or holiday?
New users should purchase at their own risk because more expereinced ones would know about the above situation. There are many accounting products available for small businesses and non-MYOB network affiliated accountants. -
"Another year another lack of effort"
Version: MYOB AccountEdge 2004 2008
Summary

Here we are approaching 2008, and MYOB is still shipping code that was written for System 7. I had high hopes that this would be the year that I finally ditched QuickBooks, but once you scratch through the ultra-thin veneer of Aquafied buttons, it doesn't look like MYOB has changed a single thing about their application. From the controls that can't draw themselves properly to the hideous icons, the whole thing looks like some Java nightmare that was only tested on Windows, and it's convoluted to boot. Bugs I reported in 2002 are still there, and I'm hard pressed to come up with a reason why I should ever give this company more money. QuickBooks blows, but it's at least somewhat usable. -
"Full featured and reliable"
Version: MYOB AccountEdge 2004 2007
Summary

I've used MYOB since 1990. While the product has had issues over years, it's been by nd large well featured and reliable. There was then and now no serious competitor to a company that wants Mac-friendly small business bokkeeping.
To the bozo who said MYOB doesn't treat their customers well:
I use a fully licensed copy of MYOB and the verifications are infrequent and painless.
You sound like a software pirate. I have NO sympathy for you needing to use a 5 year old version to avoid the license verification scheme. Between piracy and your pathetic review you should be expunged from version tracker. -
"Treating their customers badly :("

I am still using a 5 year old version of MYOB - the first one released to work on Mac OSX. I am a business coach and my clients also use the same old version. Why? - because since then MYOB has insisted on using a file verification system that makes it impossible for me to open my clients' accounts files sent via email for me to view and alter on my computer. It is an outrageously complex system they use to protect their software from piracy. I can understand regular verification of the application file but their system makes you verify your document files on a regular basis as well! It would be like Microsoft not allowing people to share word or excel document files. I have been looking for another application that is customised for Australia. When I find it I shall throw away MYOB and encourage all of my clients to do so as well. Why does MYOB care so little about its customers?! :( -

"alternative to MYOB in Australia"
Version: MYOB AccountEdge 2004 2007
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have been using MYOB for 12 years and I upgraded up to 2002 and I am now stuck with that version first OSX of Account Edge because I tried a more recent version and was disgusted at the copy protection system that MYOB imposes on its customers. I see that nothing has improved. Does anyone know of a similar application to record company accounts which has been customised for use in Australia?
