When it comes to creating documents, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations, MS Office is the suite that comes to mind. But let's face it: Office is a pricey piece of software. Thankfully, there are cheaper alternatives out there, but they don't always live up to their promise. LibreOffice offers up a free alternative, and we found it on par with its more popular competitor.

LibreOffice opens with a main menu that let us select which application we wanted to use: Base, Calc, Draw, Impress, Math, and Writer. Each application's interface will look very familiar to you if you've used MS Office products. We started with LibreOffice Writer, the suite's word-processing application. We typed up a document and formatted it without any issues. The application saves documents as .odt files by default, which cannot be opened by MS Word. But to solve any compatibility issues, it does allow you to save it as a .doc file. We proceeded to check out Calc and Impress, the suite's spreadsheet and presentation programs. Like Writer, each program introduced a familiar interface. We were able to bypass the default .ods and .odp file types to MS file types and open them without any issues. And the Math and Draw applications were just icing on top of the cake of this capable suite of tools. Should you need it, each application includes a link that takes you to the Web site for support.

LibreOffice installs and uninstalls cleanly. Its tools work just as well as their pricey competitor's, and it's free. What else can we say? We highly recommend the program.

"BEST FREE OFFICE SUITE OUT THERE!!"

August 25, 2012  |  By Keast

 |  Version: LibreOffice 3.6

Pros

Totally compatible with MS Office. Feature rich and has everything I will ever need for home and seeking work.
Office Suite of choice.

Cons

NO NEGATIVES OF ANY KIND

Summary

Used LibreOffice whilst OpenOffice was being transfered to Apache and I regretted it when I installed OpenOffice 3.4.0 and then OpenOffice 3.4.1
Was a OpenOffice use for many years until Apache got their grubby hands on OpenOffice and ruined it. Then I installed LibreOffice and boy was it better. Even the GUI was much better then OpenOffice.

August 17, 2012  |  By mikuei

 |  Version: LibreOffice 3.6

Pros

It's great, allows many types of files, both in and out.

Cons

Still hangs up for no reason every once in a while.

Summary

It looks way better than open office, and both are much better than microsoft office, but there's still a few bugs to be fixed.

"amazing functionality and speedy updates for free"

August 13, 2012  |  By ygavryli

 |  Version: LibreOffice 3.6

Pros

It has better looks than the previous crop, starts fast, and is for free.

Cons

Having installed it I had to delete a bunch of files from AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\3\user to stop it crashing (windows 7 x64). Additionally, docx files still need a odf-converter-integrator, but not a big deal.

Summary

In a few years it might do to the Microsoft Office what the latter did to the paid-for Internet browsers. At least among non-business users. Thanks LO guys anyway!

"The best free Office Suite"

August 13, 2012  |  By twoarrow

 |  Version: LibreOffice 3.6

Pros

Libre is working very long and hard to improve all that needs to be done for compatibility to MSO and other Office Suites. MS Office is very unfriendly and trying to find what you need by the Tabs they have is useless. Libre has the Icon interface like MS 2003 and below which makes it easier to put the icons where you want them and not having to search tabs. Lets not wish for and different interface because we are tired of looking at it, but lets keep whats easy and friendly like Libre has. It's worth giving a donation to people who want to give others something free and working hard to improve it.

Cons

I have not yet run into any problems, but am sure that if there is a problem, Libre will fix it with Updates. If you have a problem, first look at your computer and its setup.

Summary

People working hard to give us something free?? You don't find that to often. Soon these free Office Suites will fulling dominate.
