Editors' review

Microsoft Excel dominates the spreadsheet software market, and for a long time it was practically mandatory if you wanted to be able to share data with colleagues, classmates, or anyone else. Fortunately for our wallets, free alternatives have developed that emulate Excel, providing most, if not all, of the same features without the cash outlay that Microsoft Office requires. Kingsoft Spreadsheets is a great free alternative to Excel, and we recommend it if you're looking for a powerful spreadsheet program that won't break the bank.

If you're at all familiar with Excel 2003, you'll quickly adapt to Kingsoft Spreadsheets, as the two programs' interfaces are virtually identical. Menus and toolbars adorn the top of the interface, employing labels and symbols that are so commonplace that they require no explanation. Users who are accustomed to the ribbon interface that characterizes more recent versions of Office will have to be prepared to step back in time, but given the fact that Kingsoft Spreadsheets does everything most users will need it to do, we think that's a small price to pay. The program is fully compatible with both XLS and XLSX files, and we had no trouble opening and working with existing files that had been created with Excel; files we created in Kingsoft Spreadsheets likewise functioned just fine when opened in Excel. We often find that free spreadsheet programs lack some of Excel's more advanced features, creating frustration when it comes to formatting or formulas, but Kingsoft Spreadsheets managed every task we threw at it. The program comes with a thorough and well-written Help file that explains its features. Overall, we think that Kingsoft Spreadsheets is a great alternative to pricey spreadsheet programs, and we recommend it.

Kingsoft Spreadsheets installs politely but leaves a folder behind upon removal.

"Very good, great for small business and personal use."

    Version: Kingsoft Spreadsheets 2012 8.1.0.3030

    Pros

    Small download size.(Under 50MB)
Works quite well and has most of the functions I need.
If you are used to the older Excel 2003 interface you will be right a home with this. They are so similar you would be hard pressed to see the difference!
    Exports to PDF
    Actually FREE!
Tabbed interface, allows working with multiple workbooks at the same time, each workbook is added as another tab.
Even available for Linux and Android! (Free too!)

    Cons

None that really negatively affected my experience.
Macros only supported in paid version.
Ribbon interface only available in paid version.

    Summary

I have found Spreadsheets, to be more than adequate for most of the tasks users tend to find themselves doing. Granted I don't use the more advanced features of the program, so my view may be a bit biased. But nonetheless I find this program exceptionally useful and worth a download if you ask me.

I have seen way too many people pirate Microsoft Office, with the excuse that they don't have the money to pay. They don't have this excuse anymore.

One more thing, you may want to download the entire free version of the suite, which contains a Excel, Word and PowerPoint alternatives, the whole suite is only around 50MB!

Also Kingsoft Office Free 2013, allows you to choose between the classic and ribbon interfaces for free!

"Can replace office for small companies and personal use"

    January 20, 2013   |   By gibbet1987

    Version: Kingsoft Spreadsheets 2012 8.1.0.3030

    Pros

    Almost as good as MsOffice
Faster than its competitors (non Msoffice)
Doesn't crash as much as its non MsOffice competitors
Professional Interface resembles office 2007 almost perfectly if not better!

    Cons

HUGE CON FOR US: Restricted to 65536 lines! It DROPS all lines after that and data can be lost if the user saves it then! (It doesn't even split it across sheets)

Not as fast or efficient as office and when working with large files it can cause lot of slowness!

    Summary

Dangerous for large organizations trying to convert... but great for small ones and for personal use...

If it wasn't for the 65536 line limit, we would implement it throughout our organization!

    "Great spreadsheet program!"

    December 01, 2012   |   By ncdave4life

    Version: Kingsoft Spreadsheets 2012 8.1.0.3030

    Pros

Very similar to Excel 2003, very compatible with Excel, and in some ways better than Excel. Totally free. Remarkably compact and quick-loading, too.

    Cons

If you like the Office 2007 & later "ribbon interface," Kingsoft Office will seem old-fashioned. (But, personally, I prefer the older Office 2003 user interface.)

    Summary

This is the best and most compatible Excel clone I've found. Unlike Excel itself, it's not limited to displaying or printing just 1024 characters in a cell; in fact, if you have such an Excel spreadsheet, it will print better with Kingsoft Spreadsheets than with Excel, itself. Unlike OpenOffice/LibreOffice Calc, Kingsoft Spreasheets does not lose the formuli when saving and loading in .html format. (Note: ZoHo and Calligra do not support .html spreadsheet files at all.)

BTW, ignore PublicJohn's virus alert. He's lying, or else he downloaded something other than the real Kingsoft Office.

    The right download link is:

    Note #1: I'm using Kingsoft Spreadsheets 2012 version 8.1.0.3036, and I'm running under 64-bit Windows 7.

Note #2: Pay attention when installing. Some versions may offer to also install Kingsoft Antivirus. Be sure to deselect that if you already have another antivirus program (such as the free Microsoft Security Essentials or the built-in Windows 8 version of Windows Defender).
