"Kick Intuit's Bill Cambell off of Apple's Board!"

October 29, 2008 | By w i n t e r m u t e--2008

Version: Intuit Quicken 2006 R6

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
If you own Apple stock, vote to kick Intuit's Bill Cambell off of Apple's board. He and Intuit have done nothing to address the lousy state of Quicken for Mac which continues to severely lack behind the Windows version. Quicken for Mac isn't even Universal Binary or Intel Native and constantly crashes... even more so on new Mac Pros. How many years has it already been since Apple announced the move to Intel processors? I could forgive not having an Intel version if Quicken 2007 was at least stable on new Intel machines, but it is not. Intuit is unresponsive to Mac-based Quicken users and continues to peddle lousy software.

"Very poor quotes support "

Summary

The Quotes server, an essential and highly touted component of Quicken for your investment portfolio is currently malfunctioning and has been off and on for six months or more. This is simply unacceptable. I will not upgrade to the next version until Intuit gets their act together again.

"Upgrade from 2006 to 2007"

May 28, 2007 | By VersionTrackerUserOpinion

Version: Intuit Quicken 2006 R6

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have been using quicken since 2003. I just upgraded from 2006 to 2007. While I could complain endlessly about every little issue. Over-all. This program is feature packed. I suppose my biggest complaint is that they have yet to release a Universal Binary version. 2007 barely suggests there is a difference from that of 2006. However, it is snappier. It launches much faster and does seem a bit more stable. Also, it boasts a quick entry feature you can get to from Dashboard.

Prior to the upgrade I did try Money Dance. And yes, the application is slick, fast, and all that great stuff but does not boast the feature set that Quicken does. I might add, keep an eye out on Money Dance. Very very very nice. The problem, it does not boast the features I have come to like in Quicken.

I did have one problem with Quicken and there support team did respond with a great deal of information. The problem started after I changed my online banking passwords. I changed them via The Internet with no problem. However, Quicken does not make changing your passwords intuitive. I contacted support and the Quicken team did respond timely. So support does seem really good.

Another thing to note, if you don't their Quicken software, Intuite will give you your money back. Few Few Few software firms offer such a option.

Also, Quicken is a defacto standard for pro-sumers. I don't know how long Money Dance will be around. And, if they crumble, there doesn't appear to be a universal export feature. So, I could loose my data. Or, the software could become not functional with future OS upgrades. Quicken, on the otherhand, will have version upgrades.

So yes, Quicken needs improvement. But, the software is fantastic in yet so many ways.

Overall, the software is a 8.5-9. As with all things, room for improvement.

"Perennial Turd"

May 14, 2007 | By oscarruitt_dotmac

Version: Intuit Quicken 2006 R6

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Quicken is one of those perennial turds of the software world. All you have to do is read a few user comments for any version here on Versiontracker. It is in the same class as such notable classics as RealPlayer. Intuit owes their existence to the Mac and has crapped all over their customers ever since moving to Windows. The software crashes but yet gets more and more new features (aka Microsoftitus). I just found out that the 2004 version was discontinued and the only notice I get is when trying to connect to my bank saying, "Quicken was not able to complete your request at this time. The next time you go online for this financial institution, Quicken will attempt to re-send your original request. If the problem continues, contact your financial institution. [OL-293]." Yea, right--it's the bank's damn problem that they discontinued supporting my version of their product. You would think that somewhere in the never-ending stream of pop-ups and dialog boxes that they could have bothered to put one or two telling me to upgrade instead of making me go through their poorly-made web site for an hour to discover that I now owe Intuit another damn $49.95 for a whole new batch of bugs.

"Not worth buying more than once every three years..."

November 09, 2006 | By ziggy29

Version: Intuit Quicken 2006 15.0.3

Summary

...or so...
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I'm still using the 2005 edition. There's little reason for me to pay FULL PRICE for an upgrade every year, and it takes that long for the cumulative new features to justify the investment. Intuit's upgrade policy is the worst in the consumer software industry, bar none. It's not even close. I know of no other consumer-oriented software vendor who charges FULL PRICE for upgrades year after year, release after release.

If they offered a $29-39 upgrade instead of a $60-70 full price upgrade each year, I'd probably upgrade each year.

One feature of 2007 I like is the Quick Entry widget. I loved the QuickEntry feature of older versions of Quicken for Mac and I was very disappointed at its removal. This is a spiffy and convenient feature, but not worth $60 by itself.

My recommendation is based on new users (or people using releases prior to about 2005) and my experiences using the software. I haven't had the problems many are reporting. But that upgrade policy is still brutal, and I will not be buying the 2007 version. We'll see what new features are in Quicken 2008. If they are compelling OR if they introduce upgrade pricing (fat chance), I'll buy; otherwise, I'll sit that one out, too.

"Updater NOW works fine"

September 07, 2006 | By MacSavvy29

Version: Intuit Quicken 2006 15.0.4

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Paul Vail's superior, know it all comment grated. The first update available yesterday (not yet listed on VersionTracker) was 5.8 MB and had problems unstuffing. Tried all combinations with Stuffit Expander (I agree it's a great program). The tip on using Disk Utility did work. The revised R5 update linked on VersionTracker, or on Quicken's site is now 7.9 MB and unstuffs easily. Paul's comments on the update are welcome, but we could do without his "incompetent computer users" insult; it detracts from his otherwise useful post.

Sorry Paul, not to pile on but I realized I should have posted this as an independent review in order to rate the product. I do agree with you that Quicken is a useful product, and appreciate their efforts to update the Mac 2006 version. Let's hope they keep it up.

"Updater works fine, bug fixes welcomed."

September 07, 2006 | By Paul_Vail_674

Version: Intuit Quicken 2006 15.0.4

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is actually a review of the latest release, not the incompetent computer users struggling with .hqx (a very reliable file wrapper, by the way).

Downloaded and converted the .hqx to .dmg with Stuffit (another maligned program that does exactly what it should, but suffers from a lack of eye candy sufficient for the graphically-addicted here).

Opened the .dmg (here's a hint: try double-clicking on it with the mouse).

Installed without complaint in well under a minute.

Newer version reports itself as 15.0.4 -R5.

Crashing upon editing entries for stocks seems to have gone away. Naturally, it is too soon to tell if other bugs are out. One remaining headache is that Quicken still can only do stocks to the fourth decimal place. Some shares are broken down to the fifth, so Quicken introduces rounding errors. It'd be appreciated if Intuit could fix this (I've been asking for over 3 years and versions now). It is, after all, an accounting program so math kind of matters. One star off for that. The rest -- works as advertised. Pity people can't eval the software based on what it does, rather than their unfamiliarity with their computers. The point-n-click mac-mac crowd: you are why Windows users don't take this platform seriously for the excellent computer it is.

"Quicken problems"

September 06, 2006 | By montylee

Version: Intuit Quicken 2006 15.0.4

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I can't believe after all these years that Intuit still can't figure out how to post an updater. The review below about using Disk Utility works great. Nothing else seems to work to open this file, and I tried several different download programs. What a joke.

Of course this doesn't fix the numerous problems with Quicken (lack of decimal alignment in reports, rounding errors, inability to get money market quotes, inability to distinguish between stocks, bonds, and money markets, and many, many more). A decade ago programs like Tobias Managing your Money and others were way ahead of Quicken today in terms of reliability. Yes, Quicken has more features and seems to get more all the time, but they can't even deal with all the existing complaints. I'd pay for an upgrade that fixes the problems and adds no new features!

"Doesn't work"

Version: Intuit Quicken 2006 15.0.4

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Boy, they suck. I downloaded the upgrade, couldn't uncompress the .hqx file with stuffit expander. If there was an alternative for OSX for this piece of **** I would jump on it in a heartbeat. I can't believe they put this trash out, they seem to keep developing the windows versions and make the Mac version worse and worse. And they have the audacity to charge for it every year as an upgrade that isn't an upgrade at all. I wish Apple would do an iMoney or something like that and we could chuck this **** once and for all.
