Editors' reviewAt first glance, Internet Spider Download looked like a typical Web-site downloader. It proved to be something less. We had no problem with the candy-color interface or the solid feature set. Internet Spider Download can download via multiple connections, restrict exploration depth, and use file filters (extension, description, size, URL) to limit the output. When not retrieving files, it doesn't take much memory and runs stably. However, we were slightly irritated the internal browser doesn't provide a one-step option to begin spidering from the current page. We were even more frustrated that Internet Spider Download apparently can't just retrieve every page from a Web directory. Instead, it has to check all the links. After playing with URL filters for half an hour, we gave up. As a final insult, the uninstall process doesn't remove all the files. Internet Spider Download is no disaster, but it hardly stands out.
This download tool is for searching for, downloading, and managing any file on the Web. It can spider sites and download thousands of pictures, movies, music files, animations, Flash files, documents, archives, programs, and Web pages in a few steps. You only need to enter the site address and select the media you want, and the program will get all of it. It can resume broken downloads, copy entire sites, or create site mirrors and explore site structures. It also allows you to retry, edit, and delete any downloads.
Filters include file type, size, names, URLs, levels, and servers. The program supports all popular image formats (JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, and PSD) and video formats (MPEG, AVI, WMV, ASF, and RAM). It also supports all popular protocols (HTTP, SHTTP, and FTP), Web cookies, and Web authentication. Version 2.3 adds Web-cookie, script, and event-code support, a pop-up blocker, and performance tuning. It has an improved UI and includes bug fixes.
