CNET Editors' review
Hermes P2P from Mp3Torpedo bills itself as "the fastest file-sharing program in the world," an assertion mirrored in its name, that of the wing-footed messenger of the Greek gods. Though some might argue with the claim, citing the many factors that determine file-sharing speed, there's no doubt it's one of the fastest free peer-to-peer (P2P) clients out there. It's an adware-free, Java-based, BitTorrent Pro-compatible application that works with a proprietary embedded tracker or an external tracker. You can add multitracker information to your torrents as well as add hashes for other networks such as Gnutella and eDonkey and connect to multiple networks at the same time. It has all the standard features any respectable P2P client needs to compete in its crowded field, including fast download resume, disk caching, file previewing, chatting, bandwidth management, and advanced searching.
Free P2P clients are proliferating rapidly, and developers need exceptional design and features to stand out. Hermes P2P's efficient interface avoids the "media player" look, combining the best of Windows' style with tabbed access and attractive graphical indicators. Standard file menus, including Transfers, Tools, and Help menus, complement icon-based controls. Hermes includes efficient displays for many parameters other clients omit--for example, color-coded spectral displays comparing download and upload speeds give a quick indication of network conditions--but there's even a graphical cache display that compares read and write speeds. With a good connection, large files download very quickly indeed.
Hermes P2P is freeware; it downloads and installs cleanly but leaves folders behind after it's uninstalled.
