Editors' Review

Foxit PDF Reader, the program that many consider to be a faster, lighter, more able Windows alternative to Adobe Reader, has recently jumped to version 5.0. This newest release comes with many of the same solid features, a few new ones, and an upgraded interface.

As with the previous version, the setup process is a bit cumbersome. First, watch out for the two check boxes that make Ask your browser default search provider and Ask.com your home page. Opt out as necessary. Then, toward the end of the installation process, be sure to read carefully and opt out of the Addin for Mozilla FireFox, Opera, Safari and Chrome--unless, of course, you're into bloated toolbars. Once you make it through the installation gauntlet, the rest should be smooth sailing.

The new Foxit Reader 5.0 interface is a bit sleeker than in previous versions. It still has clean, easily distinguishable icons, and the toolbar is still customizable. In addition, you can now choose your color scheme (black, blue, orange, purple). It's not ground-breaking, but it's a nice touch. You can also choose a new ribbon-style menu and customize your own shortcut keys.

Foxit Reader 5.0 still includes many of the useful features that its rival, Adobe Reader, doesn't. There's tabbed PDF viewing, text-only view, rulers, Safe Mode, and several annotation tools for things like highlighting and commenting. Meanwhile, 5.0 has added a few conveniences that give it an extra edge, including XFA form filling, support for Microsoft RMS-protected files, and previews in Outlook.

Overall, we think the new Foxit Reader is a worthwhile download. While it may not be perfect--it can't create PDFs, and it pesters users with add-ons and upgrades--it's still a solid alternative to Adobe Reader.

Pros

Not as bloated as Adobe.

Cons

Made changes to browser without my consent.

Summary

Even though I unchecked the box, the install program added the Ask Toolbar anyway (I can disable it but I can't delete this add-on).

"Foxit used to blow Adobe away..now..not so sure"

August 01, 2010  |  By Rebuild8

 |  Version: Foxit Reader 4.0.0.619

Pros

quick, loads fast

Cons

too much adware that comes along with it

Summary

This used to be a good program. I downloaded it today for my new computer and was very careful to uncheck all the B.S. that comes along with it, and it STILL installed the Ask.com toolbar on my browser. It is truly a shame they went and screwed up a good thing. I had a link on my website to download foxit reader but I'll be taking it off now.

"Version 4 is great!"

July 31, 2010  |  By sephid

 |  Version: Foxit Reader 4.0.0.619

Pros

Fast, intuitive which provides tabbed interface, commenting, mark up tools...for free!

Cons

No cons!!!

Summary

I really like the new version (4). You can use the mark up and commenting tools without upgrading to Pro version ( It seems that Foxit doesn't have a PDF Viewer Pro anymore) which is not available in other PDF viewers. Also, I believe it is better that PDF Xchange because you need to upgrade it to Pro in order to use the bookmarking! also babylon cannot be used with PDF xchange. Currently Foxit is my first choice!

"Easier to use than adobe."

July 31, 2010  |  By jitkaau

 |  Version: Foxit Reader 4.0.0.619

Pros

It is free and fast and you don't have to go through the net stuff as you now seem to have to do with adobe.

Cons

So far have not had any problems except that some files have to take two attempts to get the complete file.

Summary

I used to use Adobe, and had no problems until they want me to upload my stuff on the net. This is easier.

"Strange problem with disappearing toolbars"

July 25, 2010  |  By sub–rosa

 |  Version: Foxit Reader 4.0.0.619

Pros

Got rid of the advertising and ask toolbar no problem and worked fine.. for a while. free.

Cons

after a while i loose the toolbars and can't restore them. it seems to happen after opening a pdf from the internet instead of saving it and then opening it. Unfortunately i have to reinstall foxit to fix this. very strange.

Summary

Until i started having toolbar issues i was very happy with foxit and have been using it for a long time. Possibly i will have to try an older version or just install something else, unfortunately. If it weren't for this i would have given this program at least 4 stars.

"Acceptable Performance"

July 25, 2010  |  By Quiet_Type

 |  Version: Foxit Reader 4.0.0.619

Pros

Small package size; fast performance; has opened every PDF I have ever attempted with it.

Cons

Even though I had unchecked the "install Foxit Toolbar" options during the installation, the toolbar installed anyway. I had to uninstall it myself afterward, That sort of behavior is intolerable.

Summary

I've always been a fan of Foxit Reader, and have used it for a long time, even though Foxit seems to have shared most of the security vulnerabilities of Adobe Reader. Nevertheless, Foxit Reader has always been small in size, and very fast in performance.

The last several years, Foxit has been bundling the Foxit Toolbar (Ask), with a way for the user to opt out of the toolbar installation by unchecking a couple of boxes. During the installation of the latest version, I unchecked the boxes as usual, but somehow ended up with the toolbar installed anyway. I find that sort of behavior intolerable. While I understand that a company distributing its software freely might desire to offset its costs through toolbars or advertising, if the customer opts out of those things, then that should be it. Either the installation should end there, or the installation should continue without the toolbar.

Disappointed at Foxit Reader's recent behavior, I re-examined other PDF readers, and found one that surpasses Foxit Reader in quality, power, and features. It's a little larger installation, but still less than half the size of Adobe Reader.
