CNET Editors' review
Between surfing for work and play, you may not realize how many types of files actually reside on your system. This free application will open your eyes as to the many file types you possess and help you manage them in a systematic fashion.
FileTypesMan loads a simply designed interface with two panes. The upper, larger pane lists all file extensions and types registered on your computer. For each file type, the following information is displayed: Type Name, Description, MIME Type, Perceived Type, Flags, Browser Flags, and more. The lower, smaller pane lists the files associated with the type you select in the upper pane.
This application performed well in our tests, quickly listing file types and associated files. We liked that we could optimize the listing by choosing not to display icons by the file types, and that we could generate an HTML report that logged all file types or simply the type we selected--handy feature when auditing one's system. FileTypesMan was particularly helpful in editing file extensions for programs that overwrite or replace previous extensions associated with similar programs.
Novices may be overwhelmed by information overload when they look at the file types installed on their systems, and they should be careful of editing file types, particularly in RegEdit. This is a powerful little application--its simple appearance is deceptive--and experienced users will appreciate the management capabilities it provides.
