"Beware if you switch to Mac Maverick OS"

March 10, 2014  |  By pe0m

 |  Version: Evernote 5.5

Pros

Generally speaking this is a useful app

Cons

Twice since updating my Mac to the Maverick OS this app has turned up showing a "blank state." Not a single note that I had created was visible. I don't remember how I got my data back the first time. I thought it was a fluke that the data appeared to have been deleted. The second time it happened I couldn't find the notes from within Evernote. I couldn't find any data files with the lost info anywhere on my hard drive. Finally I shut down the computer and restarted it. The data was back, so I exported all of it to HTML files.

Summary

May not be suitable to use with Mac OS "Maverick."

"Good but unstable"

February 06, 2014  |  By particleman137

 |  Version: Evernote 5.5

Pros

Beautiful, full featured, and effective note database. It's able to lots of handle complex notes, all for free. It's available on every imaginable platform and with seamless synchronization of notes. Most importantly, it's easy to backup your evernote data and as easy as possible to migrate away from evernote. Sharing notes is a beautiful dream.

Cons

Evernote on mac is pretty unstable. Many of it's features spontaneously stop working--especially search and opening notes in their own window. These can be easily fixed by restarting Evernote, but I'm disappointed that these bugs have persisted through several generations of software updates.
Finding your notes can be a trying experience. The search box is pretty dumb. There are some advanced search features in it, but using those are more likely to make evernote crash than to find your notes.
The Evernote help forum is full of questions that are never answered.

Summary

I use evernote on a daily basis and it has become an essential part of my brain/workflow. I'm satisfied with most aspects but very annoyed by it's instability and troubled that it's issues seem to never get addressed in software patches. Evernote search is not google! Finding your notes can be hard and using advanced search options often just makes Evernote blow up. It's the best note taking tool in 2014, but it probably own't be in a few years.

"Hijacks the NVIDIA GPU kills battery life by half"

February 01, 2012  |  By summerstormpictures

 |  Version: Evernote 3.0.6

Pros

An inspired but rather confused interface.

Cons

My 5-plus hours of battery life drops to 2.5 or less if I leave this application open.

Summary

The developers must not ever go mobile because they seem to be uninspired to economize. My 5-plus hours of battery life drops to 2.5 or less if I leave this application open. Why is it necessary for this to use the NVIDIA GPU? This is the same fail the developers at Mozilla have. Their web browser, while smart enough not to use the NVIDIA GPU, once it is spun off into a process, it is not smart enough to give it back (switch back to the Intel onboard chipset. It's really high time developers stop this practice. Unless you are working with multimedia, there's no reason to use the NVIDIA chipset. None.
