I love having a button in Firefox I can click to save a full copy of a web page. I love being able to take video snaps and save them to Evernote, or to take a picture with my phone and e-mail it to my Evernote account. I love that Evernote will scan the photos or scanned documents for text and will index everything it can recognize!!

Fantastic. I like having my data synced to the web as well; a nice backup mechanism.

"Evernote 1.1.5"

I discoverd the power of Evernote when I saw some colleagues using it on their tablet PCs. The PC versions 1 & 2 were a direct competitor to Microsoft OneNote, and let you annotate by hand over other files and save everything as a note. Notes were displayed just like in a blog, and the notes collapsed so you could scroll through topics. Really cool. With version 3 (Mac v.1) Evernote has changed directions. The ability to sync across multiple computers, platforms and online has now become the central feature of the program.

In comparison to other note taking programs for the Mac, Evernote is clearly optimised for web searching, and it is the best program out there at present for this task, even in beta. It is limited to image attachments though, so if you are trying to manage a research database with a wide variety of file types, then a database like DEVONthink is a far better option.

There are still some features lacking: You can't batch tag large groups of notes; as yet Evernote's annotation features aren't implemented in the Mac version; and I would like to see a quick way to tag favourites. Syncing across platforms is what makes Evernote special, but I have had problems with syncing and don't always have the same number of notes in my online account as I do on my Mac. Unfortunately there is no way to reset the server side account like you can for example with MobileMe, so if you have a syncing problem, you must delete your local database file and then sync from the server. This means you can lose data if there are more notes on your Mac than on the server.

Everybody at Evernote Support is called Evernote Support! Their policy of anonymity means you never know who you're emailing back and forward to and there is no way of ensuring continuity while trying to solve a problem. I ended up getting a Windows answer to a Mac problem last time I tried.

But otherwise, Evernote is a really elegant program and it will be exiting to see how it develops on the Mac platform.
