CNET Editors' review
Simple freeware to simply fix a simple problem simply describes this 1704 error repair tool. Error 1704 Cleanup Utility's two-button interface couldn't be any easier to use. You merely click a single button to clean up your 1704 error problem.
If you get a 1704 error during installation, you will need this application. It's a problem that occasionally occurs when adding a program with Windows Installer. The error often blocks you from installing any other application using the Installer. Running this executable quickly clears the problem Windows Registry entry. If your system doesn't have the error, the utility reports the fact.
The utility has a silent option for use in batch files, but has no other functions. This freeware is a small, but helpful, tool for any user's USB problem-fix toolbox.
Publisher's Description
From Chris Millard Software Design:
Sometimes, when you try to (un)install a program packaged with Windows Installer, the routine fails. It leaves behind registry entries that give an Error 1704 - preventing further (un)installs of Windows Installer packaged programs. This utility will remove the registry entries that cause the Error 1704. Version 2 can now be run from the command line with a /silent switch to allow usage within batch files and scripts - ideal for network administrators who want this to run at logon / logoff.

"Use it post install as a ..."
Version: Error 1704 Cleanup Utility 2
Pros
Does what it intends to do. Does what it does quickly. Does its thing minus stupid ware of any kind.
Cons
Get a life...
Summary
I use this thing as a preventative measure post install any product just in the off chance I embraced an idiot application or my system's slimed up from ware of some misfit orientation.
Had a similar problem with the good ol' MSI service regarding a Silverlight 3 plug-in that inadvertently screwed my .Net framework rendering quite a great deal of work and time in Vista Ultimate mute. Needless to say the rest is red in the face history.
This bad boy may have had been of some assistance if I had only known of its existence then.
You could probably get away with installing an application, do a system reboot to be on the safe side, fire up the application to get it some system and registry burn in, possibly reboot your system one more time, and then use this cleaner regardless.

"Worked Great."
Version: Error 1704 Cleanup Utility 2
Pros
Simple interface, virus free, worked.
Cons
False positive - had to add to my exceptions list.
Summary
It works and does not contain a virus, so the bottom line is that it is a great program.

"Doesn't work, may have malware"
Version: Error 1704 Cleanup Utility 2
Pros
Sounds promising
Cons
I ran regmon to see what it was doing and the app killed it. Didn't fix the problem. Many AV vendors flag it as malware. May be OK as I assume it's doing a lot of registry updates which can look like malware. But be safe.

CounterSpy detected it as: Threat: Backdoor.Win32.Small.lu
Category: Backdoor
Severity: Severe Risk -
"Identified as "MALWARE" by Avast, which is also rated as "5 stars" on this site"
Version: Error 1704 Cleanup Utility 2
Pros
I terminated the download because Avast Anti-virus software -- another bit of freeware identified on download.com as 5 stars -- identified the .Zip file as MALWARE.
Cons
You may think this is irony. For me, it's confirmation the clowns at CNET aren't nearly as smart as they should be.
