Publisher's description
From Heidi Computers :Eraser is an advanced security tool for Windows that allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. It works with Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, XP, and DOS. The patterns used for overwriting are based on Peter Gutmann's paper "Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory" and are selected to effectively remove magnetic remnants from the hard drive. Other methods include the one defined in the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual of the U.S. Department of Defence, and overwriting with pseudorandom data. You can also define your own overwriting methods.

Version: Eraser 5.7
"Excellent tool for real deletion of files"
Pros: It works great. It really deletes, obliterates, vanishes... whatever you want to call it, the files it processes. Remember that Trashcan files can be recovered. With this tool, simply right mouse the trascan, choose "Erase" and contents will really be gone; unrecoverable. You can choose from a 1 pass to 35 passes. It is a tool I really like and recommend.
Cons: Absolutely NONE

Version: Eraser 5.7
"Excellent Free Program...Use with caution"
Pros: It completely erases any trace of previously deleted files from your hardrive ,and gives you back space.
Cons: I can see why alot of new users are having problems with it...Whatever you do,do not interrupt it,while the program is running.Set it up,and leave your pc alone till it's done...Towards the end of the cycle,it creates folders to hold all the overwriting its doing,at the very end it deletes everything it overwrites.Leaving your hardrive nice and clean....If you stop it while it's overwriting it will have taken up a significant portion of your hardrive. So don't stop it after you start it!

Version: Eraser 5.7
"Good file shredder to have despite some glitches"
Pros: This program does wonders when it comes to my disk's security. I can just right click on the files and select Erase, and let the program do its thing, or use the Scheduler to delete tons more files when I'm not at my machine. And nowadays, with everyone being so paranoid, it's important to clean your hard drive every once in a while.
Cons: It's a good file shredder but it does have some glitches. On hard drives with compressed files it'll give errors like "Error: Reached the end of file" and "Failed...", and sometimes it will lockup and make a file grow to the maximum extent (the remaining free space on your hard drive). And it seems it takes forever to overwrite your hard drives anyway, especially if you try to use the Gutmann method on a 40 GB hard disk. I would put it on "Pseudorandom Data" for speed.

Version: Eraser 5.7
"This program has very good erasing capabilities."
Pros: this program is one of the best sensitive file erasing programs i have ever seen. This program can allow you to set your wiping at 1 pass (not very secure), 3 passes (secure), 7 passes (extremely secure and government standard) and 35 passes (super extremely secure, longest wipe.) The program can quickly and securely wipe out files of any size in a matter of minutes.
