The popular Cheetah Mobile Clean Master earns high marks for antivirus protection and usability, but the price of this free app is pushy self-promotion.
Ready protection: Tap the Antivirus icon at the bottom left of the app's home screen to initiate a scan. Clean Master also automatically checks for potential problems when you download a new or updated app. After a scan, Clean Master displays results and other potential problems (such as privacy issues) that it has found.
Top scores on malware detection and usability: Cheetah Mobile gets high marks on device protection and usability from the security and antivirus research firm AV-Test.
Helpful companion apps: Cheetah offers a broad collection of related security and performance-improvement apps for monitoring app permissions and freeing up memory.
Adds duplicate shortcuts and unwanted app: After installation, the app puts a duplicate Clean Master shortcut icon on the Android home screen and an unwanted 1 Tap Boost shortcut.
Pushy notifications: The app sends frequent messages to your phone's notification drawer about related Cheetah Mobile services it wants you to activate and use.
Misleading messages: After a Clean Master virus scan, the app displays a confusing message stating that your device is at risk and you need to "Improve device security level" by installing better Cheetah antivirus and privacy protection.
Cheetah Mobile Clean Master does a solid job of guarding your phone, but its misleading messages, nagging notifications, and attempts to upsell you to other apps and services make it as much a nuisance as a help.

Acts like a Virus
I've used this before with no problem, but this latest update is garbage. It constantly wants to clean the same files it cleaned 30 minute ago and keeps reminding me.
I get a lot of ads, more than previous versions and it eats up my battery life.
To add insult to injury, it automatically adds Charge Master to my phone which notifies me if I overcharge my phone. But it changed my homescreen and the ads keep me from accessing my messages. I have to "unlock" the Charge Master adware before I can access my messages.
I never asked to install Charge Master, the Clean Master app added it automatically without my permission and there appears to be no way to delete it.
I have tried to remove Clean Master and it reinstalls itself, even with my phone set to Manual updates, so it's almost like a virus.
This SPAM provider constantly interferes with the use of my phone. Whenever I want to use the phone this garbage switches to its ad-screen and causes calls to be missed.
When I switch to email, this garbage constantly switches to its AD SCREEN and prevents you from using your phone the way YOU want - by not having to click on their ads in order to read the email.
I cannot count the times I have cursed this trash for interfering with my phone usage.
It is worthless if it interferes and hijacks your phone.
Avoid this spamware at all costs.
You will wake up in the morning to find Cleanmaster has transferred many gigabytes of data overnight. Especially bad if you have a limited data plan. I can't imagine any legitimate reason for the app to be eating data like this.
Is it a bug or is it a virus? Doesn't matter. Don't download it.
Deletes files without you knowing what's being deleted. It was offered as a companion to File Manager for Android, which is a pretty good product so far. After it scanned, it offered to clean up files, and SUPPOSEDLY was allowing me to choose what types of files. I was impressed with what I thought were the results - 66% free storage - until I found out it DELETED ALL OF MY AUDIO FILES WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. Thank God I have Wondershare on my PC and had those files backed up!
Last week this app began using massive amounts of data during the night when no one was using the phone and the app was closed. At 1.5GB at a time, over just a few days it used up and exceeded our data plan for no apparent reason.
If you have it, remove it immediately. If you don't have it yet, don't install it. There are other apps that do the same thing safely, including those that come with your phone.
