"The program does not work for me."
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
Free service and accuracy of finding out of date software.
Cons
This is a problem I have been having and I don't know if it is universal. In the previous make of this program, it was very good at locating out of date software and offering an update. It did have a glitch of continuing to show software as out of date after it had been updated. This was not always a problem but, on the software that continued to show up, it was persistent.
Using this current version, when I attempt to update, I receive the statement, "No registered application for this extension". Even after re-installing, I get the same result. A couple of the programs were not out of date and the one I replaced from CNET, still shows as out of date.
These bugs have been reported to CNET.
Unfortunately, I will be removing this application from my computer to make room for other things I want! Thank you for the opportunity to address my reasoning!Summary
The concept is great, it just does not work in reality for me!

"Takes over your PC on download.com. Hate this version!"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
It scans quickly & lists which SW has a new version available. Has fewer false positives than earlier versions.
Cons
This used to a pretty decent, well-behaved app but not any more. You can no longer just download directly from download.com; it always wants to use TechTracker. Even if you click on Secure Download or Standard Install, which to me means I'll install it myself, TT takes over. I have every possible setting w/in TT set to "Manual" but it does NOT respect that.
Summary
If you want an app to take over your computer, this one's for you; if you actually want to manage your own system, not so much...

"works OK most of the time"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
Reminds me to update my programs
Cons
doesn't seem to pick up on the programs that I have set for automatic updates.
-
"Great way to keep up to date!"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
Tracks all your software for you.
Cons
Sometimes gives notices on new versions you need to buy. Maybe that's not all bad. Sometimes have notice for something already updated.
Summary
A few minor glitches but still a five star in my book.

"Not user friendly"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
Shows all the needed updates
Cons
Have tried numerous times to update my out-of-date programs, with no success
Summary
TechTracker needs work....no reason why the updates are not installing. In fact, even clicking on "Standard Install" does nothing.
-
"This used to be a good program."
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
flags programs needing updates.
Cons
Too many 'false positives'.
Now the program puts out a window asking for some program or other to be running in order to download updates. Very confusing. I'll be uninstalling and using something else.Summary
Something has gone wrong with this program.

"TechTracker"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
Does a good job of monitoring software for the latest updates
Cons
Often reports software being out of date when it is not. A current example is Advanced System Care which is showing out of date but is not. I checked at the website and I am up to date
Summary
This app would be perfect if not for the above flaw.
-
"Definitely not ready for prime time"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
Lists software for which updates are available.
Cons
Terrible process - it is far easier to go to directly to each software site and update from there.
Summary
Close to useless.

"Can not compare current and update release numbers"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
Tracks more software than FileHippo's Update Checker.
Cons
Does not show you your current release or version number so you can make a judgement on whether or not to update. Example, if my Picasa is version 3.9.135.78 do I really want to bother downloading 14MB to get version 3.9.135.83 and take the time to install it? NO! FileHippo's Update Checker does show you the two versions so you can see if a significant version change has been made. De-installed stupid TechTracker.
