CNET Editors' review
This free Firefox add-on is supposed to let you block certain Web sites. But what is actually does is block every single site you attempt to visit.
BlockSites plain interface is fairly straightforward, which is good since there's no Help menu. It allows you to enable warning messages for blocked sites, set up your password, and manage your lists of allowed and blocked sites. The program, though simple in design, seemed flexible at first, allowing you to add, edit and even import and export Web site links. We added sites to both the Black- and Whitelists, but the program blocked each site that we tried to visit regardless of which list it was on. Ultimately, we had to disable the program to visit any sites at all.
Don't bother with this one. It doesn't work and you'll merely waste time setting up lists.
Publisher's Description
From Erik van Kempen:
BlockSite is an extension, which automagically blocks Web sites of your choice. Additionally, this extension will disable all hyperlinks to these Web sites, by just displaying the link text without the clicking functionality. This extension should by no means be used for parental control or access control purposes, just because it isn't secure and can easily be disabled or even removed. This extension adds the site blocking functionality that was removed from Adblock Plus.

"Other reviewers don't know what they're talking about"
Version: BlockSite 0.7.1.1
Pros
Blocks sites, prevents the links from even being clickable
Cons
You need to know what you're doing? o_O
Summary
This extension does NOT block every site, as the other reviewers state. The problem is the users mistakenly creating wildcard filters that match all sites. It's not an issue with the extension. Learn how to use it.
I'm using BlockSite 0.7.1.1 in Firefox 4 and it works totally fine. Check your filters. One of them is overreaching.
Can't believe a CNET editor would publicly admit to incompetence like this. -
"Used to work"
Version: BlockSite 0.7.1.1
Pros
It used to block the sites that I wanted it to, while allowing me to see other sites.
Cons
Now it usually blocks every single site and has to be disabled.
Summary
It used to work, but lately (since Firefox 4? Since I added to many sites to my list?) it blocks all sites, just as described in the cnet review. I've gone through a lot of gyrations of disabling and enabling it and it may have worked briefly, but mostly it just blocks everything. I'm looking for an alternative.
