Sometimes going through the trouble of loading up OpenOffice or iWork just to get some thoughts down on digital paper is an ordeal. Bean is a simple word processing app which lets you get to work right away and offers plenty of useful features. It has a live word count option and you can control the margins. Bean also can export to .DOC format for Word compatibility. Though it isn't a replacement for Word (no customized headers and footers or pre-defined text styles), it does fill the need for a quick and uncluttered writing tool with modest features which is easy to launch quickly. If you're looking for something more than Mac OS X's Text Edit, but want to stay away from the slow loading big office suites, check out Bean.Publisher's description
From Bean :Bean is a rich text editor, with many niceties added to make writing convenient, efficient and comfortable. It is, to use a horrible clich, Text Edit on steroids. Bean uses Apple's very cool NSText object to do most of what it does, but it adds live word count and the ability to adjust printed margins. Lots of other bells and whistles too. MS Word, OpenOffice, etc. try to be all things to all people. But sometimes you just want the right tool for the job. That is the niche where Bean lives.

"A pleasure to use for uncomplex things"
Pros: An attractive and intuitive interface makes this program a pleasure to use. SO easy to change margins (clever, 'idiot proof' windows), line spacing (you can invent your own!) and zoom page in and out, using sliders. Simple inspector that tells you all you need to know, no more, no less. A great program to use when you don't need all the paraphernalia (and frustration) that comes with Microsoft Word. Try it. It's great. I've been using word processors for 25 years every day for all sorts of stuff, and I love this program.
By the way, I agree that people who haven't used the program - or could not, for some reason, download it - (and it took me about 10 seconds to download and install it) should not be given space on these review pages. Their opionion is worth a great big fat 'O', as they don't know what they are talking about. It's not fair that they should influence the overall rating. Get rid of them! It's like me giving an opinion of the new iMacs but I didn't use one yet because I couldn't get the box open! :-)
