Publisher's Description
From AVAST Software:
Avast Antivirus Mac Edition has the same ICSA Certified scan engine as all Avast antivirus products, offering protection against the latest and legacy virus, malware, Trojan horse, and spyware risks. Virus definitions and scanning capabilities are updated often (sometime several times per day, depending on current threats), so you can rest assured that your Mac is protected at all times. All you need to do is install, configure once (if you want to change the default settings) and forget about malware being a problem.
Some key features of Avast Antivirus Mac Edition includes: full on-access scanning--which scans files as you access them, to make sure they are safe from infection; on-demand scanning--for scheduled or ad-hoc scans of your system volumes; mail protection-integrated mail protection can stop infection at one of the most vulnerable access vectors; Virus Chest--a safe storage place for infected or suspected files, where they cannot harm your system; fully automatic updating of the program and virus definitions; and full scanner preference control
Under-the-hood technology features include: native execution of virus database on Intel platform Macs, with fast emulation on PowerPC of assembler-level parts; multi-threaded scanning daemon; industry leading unpacker support (for archives); able to upgrade the definitions database, even while doing background scanning; application itself multi-threaded; fail-safe updating architecture (if the daemon fails to do an update, the main application will do it instead); kernel extension architecture for capturing after-close events on modified files; optimized software architecture, including non-blocking system calls; and the program is designed for speed and non-degraded system performance. What's new in this version:
- Smart virus updates - Incremental updating system minimizes the size of update file
- New antivirus and antispyware engine - New packers, faster scan
- Scheduled scanning - Automatic one-time or regular scans
- Path exceptions - Better customized scanning
- Hidden mode - No pop-ups

"Wouldn't launch. Received a fatal error message (555)."
Version: Avast Antivirus 3.11
Pros
None. The program never launched.
Cons
Received a fatal error message after downloading and launching (555 error code). Safari wouldn't connect to the internet after downloading avast. Kept asking to install growler package but growler never downloaded because my computer wouldn't connect to the internet.
Also, the preferences selection was grayed out so I couldn't check and / or change any settings.Summary
I uninstalled this as fast as I could. I hope that I haven't trashed my iMac to the point of having to reformat and reload the operating system.

"Meh - its an antivirus for a virus free mac world"

"VERY thorough, difficult disposal of suspect files"
Version: Avast Antivirus 3.11
Pros
Found all attached volumes. Thorough search of archived and backed up files. Simple interface. flexible operation.
Cons
Needs improvement as relates to Time Machine backed up files
Summary
The Mac OS X version needs to come up with a better way of dealing with Time Machine backed up suspect files. I received ten warnings about the same decompression bomb that had been hidden in a Netscape package. Only one was a file that I could do anything about. Avast also found a corrupted file in a documentation package for an unused utility AND the ten Time Machine backups that were impossible to fix. Fast, simple, and NOT a resource hog. It scanned fifteen million files in six hours finding these twenty-two low level problems. No sign of the MalWare what brung me. I strongly recommend it.
