This program transforms PDFs into a variety of file types, but a painful installation process and some performance issues hold it down. Installing ABBYY PDF Transformer takes too long, and when you finally get it on your machine, you must surrender your e-mail address (and opt out of newsletters) to get a registration code. The program can save PDFs as Word, Excel, HTML, or PDF files, and it integrates as a toolbar item into those first two applications for editing purposes. You also get a wizard that walks you through the conversion process. In multiple tests, the program worked just fine, though it had problems preserving formatting on more complex files. Tables and diagrams were a particularly weak spot. We also found the conversion process quite slow, and the demo restriction (only three-page conversions and fifteen uses) a little stingy. And if that weren't bad enough, consider the fact this utility consumes a hefty 75MB of memory. This isn't the worst such utility we've ever seen, but it's definitely not the best.

  "Worked OK, but conversion results are poorly structured & difficult to use"

  Pros: Conversion is pretty fast and pretty accurate. Plain text is rendered well.

  Cons: Converts only horizontal text. Doesn't separate words & numbers in a PDF table into Excel columns very well. E.g., table rows are often rendered as a single cell with many numbers separated by spaces. Text embedded in graphics is not rendered accurately.

  "Cost effective"

  Pros: Interprets text beautifully from PDF's, a book from 1915 in Danish with very high accurary. Compared to the competition, the price is OK. They offer a prolonged download service and to ship a backup for a small fee.

  "50 PAGE LIMITATION"

  Cons: Like so much of the software on this site now, the full limitations are not disclosed. The trial version of this program will only do the first 50 pages. I need to see if a converter works for very large documents. Therefore I'm S.O.L. with this one unless I buy it to see.

  "Not for me"

  Pros: Quick, but takes time to understand the interface and make correct choises for transforming.

  Cons: I have used ver 1 in the past without any problems. Ver 2 did not transform 7 page pdf document correctly. Went back to setup, and tried again, this time with other errors. Tables are scewed, other paragraph formating errors to MS Word. I felt that ver 2 would be an improvement, but have gone back to ver 1 where I get simple transformation (10 pages or less) to MS Word without errors.
