Editors' Review
The name SugarSync Manager might conjure up images of a pimply teen sullenly manning a pinktacular technology-themed candy store, but the reality is far more pleasant: SugarSync is an online storage, sync, and sharing service, and SugarSync Manager is its software client. (Yes, the client is the "manager.")
SugarSync works similarly to other top software in its category--users install the free SugarSync Manager on any computers and devices they wish to connect; they select the folders that they want it to back up and/or sync online; and then SugarSync automatically keeps their data up-to-date and synced on all devices. For example, any changes, deletions, or additions to your laptop will appear automatically on your work computer, if you choose to connect the two.
SugarSync also allows users to store music, video, and personal files online and use them whenever they have Internet access (which is almost everywhere these days). The software works with most mobile devices, including Apple, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Mobile. The basic service is free and comes with 5GB of online storage. Users requiring more storage space can upgrade to one of SugarSync's premium plans.
A registered account--including active e-mail address, name, and password--is required to use SugarSync. When the program starts you'll be prompted to sign in or sign up and choose a plan--most users will pick the free 5GB version (it's easy to upgrade later if you want). A user-friendly wizard then walks you through each step of the setup process that involves choosing which folders to back up online and sync to other devices.
By default, SugarSync Manager selects all of the system's files, which will almost certainly require more than 5GB for most users. But a tree-style view lets users easily select or uncheck folders they do and don't want to sync. It's also possible to include a folder and exclude subfolders, which is a nice option. A Windows system-tray menu provides access to quick actions or accessing the full manager software. Users can also log in to My SugarSync to manage account and data online.
SugarSync works well with a user-friendly interface and setup process that rivals the best in its category.
