Apple's iTunes used to be simply a versatile jukebox program that brought Mac users into the digital-music world, but new features that tune up its jukebox and the much-ballyhooed iTunes Music Store push it over the top. Seamless integration with the iPod, smart playlists, CD burning, and label printing create an 800-pound gorilla. With version 4.9 Apple has welcomed the Podcasting community into the fold, making it ridiculously easy to tune in to this exciting new medium. Finding and downloading podcasts works exactly as the same way as downloading tunes from the Music Store, except that all content is free. Another one of our favorite features is Party Shuffle, which keeps a queue of songs at the ready that you can rearrange. iTunes supports MP3, AAC, AIFF, WAV, and a proprietary format called Apple Lossless, which gives you uncompressed audio quality with files half the size. The Bon Jour sharing feature lets you see and play the playlists and music libraries of other users on your network.

One unfortunate quirk is how iTunes handles unprotected WMA files. We would prefer the program just play those files, rather than re-encode them into AAC format. Regardless, iTunes continues to be one of the best jukeboxes available.

Publisher's description

From Apple :

iTunes, the award-winning digital-jukebox software, is now available for Mac and Windows. The iTunes Music Store offers Windows users the same online music store as Mac users, with the same music catalog, the same personal-use rights, and the same 99-cents-per-song pricing. With music from all five major music companies and more than 600 independent labels, the iTunes Music Store catalog now offers more than 1,000,000 songs. Features include a free download with no hidden charges for extra features, MP3 and pristine-quality AAC-encoding from audio CDs, smart playlists, more than 250 free Internet radio stations, and the ability to burn custom playlists to CDs and MP3 CDs, to burn content to DVDs to back up an entire music collection, and to share music via Rendezvous over any network, cross-platform. Other features include iMix, which lets you post and e-mail songs in your playlists for everyone to see, and you can rate iMixes from other music lovers and discover new music; Party Shuffle, with which you can add, delete, and rearrange songs on the fly; Apple Lossless, which lets you import music from CDs and achieve sound quality indistinguishable from the original, at about half the original file size--it plays in iTunes and on iPods, five computers can play protected songs (up from the previous limit of three), and identical playlists containing protected songs can be burned up to seven times (down from 10); and the ability to get music and audiobooks related to a movie, to see a music video and get the track, to download a free song, to preview in Playlists and in Quick Links, to save store previews to purchase later, to find more music via Quick Links in your library, to automatically convert WMA files to AAC, to convert the music you saved in Windows Media Player (unprotected WMA files) to AAC format, to print CD inserts for your album or mix disc using designer templates for both color and black-and-white printers, and to find out what's playing on more than 1,000 radio stations around the U.S.

New in this version: iTunes 4.9 now lets you search and download Podcasts.

    "What's the big deal?"

by Green Day Rule! on July 1, 2005

Pros: It plays music well and is quite easy to get the hang of. It took me around 10 minutes to learn how to use this program.

Cons: I honestly don't see what this program does that Win Media Player doesn't. Win Media is able to play video files and streaming audio which Itunes cant. Itunes is also not the most user friendly program when it comes to creating playlist. You also need QUicktime to run it, and with the latest release of Quicktime (version 7) you should think twice.

The absolute worst thing about the program is that everytime an update is available (quite often - once a month perhaps) you must download the program in it's entirety with Quicktime all over again, which isn't the smallest of downloads.

    "Incredible Jukebox and More"

    by S.Hall on August 14, 2005

Pros: One of my favorite features is the ability to share music on my LAN with my family -- we can all listen to each others music seamlessly. The features and ease-of-use of this product is a cut above the rest.

I can see why Download.com gives it such high ratings, it truly deserves them. Give it a try for a week.
