Editors' Review

YouTube Downloader is a popular, free program that enables you to download and convert online videos (legal content, to which you have the rights) for later viewing on your desktop or mobile device. It can convert files to MOV, MP4, 3GP, WMV, AVI, or MP3.

The name "YouTube Downloader" is terribly misleading because the program, in fact, downloads a whole lot more than just YouTube videos. On the developer's site, you can find an extensive list of additional supported sites including Facebook and Vimeo. This wide net of support easily pushes YouTube Downloader to the top of its category.

When you find a video you'd like to download, copy the URL of the video page and open YouTube Downloader. From there, you'll notice that the program automatically pastes the URL into the appropriate field. Choose your desired Download quality (Best Available is a nice option) and your destination folder, then hit Download. Once your download is finished, hit the Play tab to watch. The Convert tab lets you export to a different file format for playing elsewhere, and gives you a convenient mini editor for making minor alterations before your export. You can change video volume (or remove audio altogether) and splice footage by setting specific start and end times.

One thing that disappointed us was the absence of a one-step download-and-convert function in the free version. If you want the one-step convenience, you'll have to upgrade to Pro ($19.90), which also gives you the capability of downloading multiple videos at once. Also, it would've been nice to be able to name files before downloading them, but that's certainly not a deal-breaker.

For online video enthusiasts looking to download non-copyrighted or personally owned videos, YouTube Downloader appears to be a near-perfect tool. Sure it's missing a few minor conveniences, but its simplicity and the fact that it casts such a wide net of support for online video sites make it virtually unbeatable.

"Oh adware, y so adware?"

January 06, 2012  |  By eris_nargis

 |  Version: YouTube Downloader 3.5

Pros

-Does its job of ripping videos off Youtube and various other sites
-Better interface than previous versions

Cons

-With Firefox it resets your default search bar to Yahoo. Good luck changing it back.
-On my laptop it managed to attempt to download every URL. I want to check facebook -> type address into FF -> YTD attempts to download video, can't access FB -> ***?!!

Summary

Uninstalled the product after years of use. You get what you pay for, and while I could deal with its flaws in previous incarnations I just can't be bothered now.

"Malware and Virus!"

January 06, 2012  |  By kaycutie1

 |  Version: YouTube Downloader 3.5

Pros

None. This download is not worth the problems.

Cons

Installed malware, toolbars and a virus to my computer!

Summary

The old version worked great! It did exactly what it claimed to do. The new version does download videos from You Tube however its not worth having malware and a virus infected PC. CNET needs to remove this from their site.

"Does what it says it will do... but there is a price"

January 02, 2012  |  By nickwelborne

 |  Version: YouTube Downloader 3.5

Pros

Performed as described; warns that it requires a browser toolbar add-on in order to install (up front or in process?). Successful download, installation and usage to obtain videos needed for Powerpoint presentation next day. Free version requires two-step process--uploading and THEN converting. Relatively efficient (large files, so it does take time!) and able to run other activities in parallel. Supported on 2003 XP!

Cons

* Installs in Program without UNINSTALL option.
* Toolbar a nuisance cluttering and slowing browser.
* Trouble with PC compounded since--coincidence?
* Was suspicious and removed after a week or so.
* Removed toolbar after a week and primary program still appeared functional, but have avoided use.
* Other sources may have caused, but have been contending with cascading series of problems in month since installation, including:
- registry corruption; USB device malfunctions; eventually required RESTORE to much earlier time; have done TWO restores since while troubleshooting other problems, probably unrelated:
- Outlook Express "compacting process" froze up; next day, entire INBOX empty (problem related to McAfee and was resolved after a full day using .BAK version of Inbox), etc. etc. Still studying ALL security threats inherent to "FREE" software.

Summary

You get what you pay for. Many free softwares are malware and may cause harm from nuisance (adware) to major threats to registry, AV software, or identity theft. YOU MUST RESEARCH.

EVEN the safer/better sites are risky because among the legitimate downloads there will be some malicious ones, and who is expert enough to be sure?

Don't trust many URL's reviewing and praising free software. Most of them are playing an angle. Many free softwares claiming to be helpful, such as Uniblue Registry Mechanic, are elsewhere identified as impossible to remove.

Worst Yet: even some legitimate proprietary softwares are now being compromised by hackers. As an example look up "Realtek AC'97" Audio Driver software, whose VERISIGN identity codes were stolen last year.

BEST BET: Review all software intending to download through multiple sites; look for those critical of the software. What do major players like Microsoft and McAfee have to say? Some free softwares are wonderful, eg. Audacity; Exact Audio Copy, but uploading free stuff from unknown (and even from formerly-trusted) sources like CNET and Softpedia will always involve risks, and these risks are getting more sophisticated, widespread, and dangerous.

LAST WORD: YouTube-Downloader may have had nothing to do with my PC instability, but using software like it is like unprotected sex in a country notorious for a high incidence of STD's. Whenever you invite a program to alter your registry, BE CAUTIOUS!
