CNET Editors' review
Recent versions of Windows have greatly improved a download experience that once left much to be desired. However, many of the third-party apps that came about to address deficiencies in Windows are still around in the form of specialized, often free utilities that promise to improve on the specific functionality of certain features. One of these is Goforsharing's Xcelerator 1.3, a free download accelerator patch that offers enhanced downloading algorithms and architecture that improves upon Windows' built-in capabilities. It's based upon peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing network technology. To use Xcelerator, you need a P2P client such as BitTorrent or LimeWire.
Xcelerator's colorfully skinned interface is more typical of a media player than a Windows utility, with controls to select which P2P client to run or quit the program, and displays of network statistics and performance. Right-clicking the program's System Tray icon calls up a menu with a link to a Web-based Help file and other information, such as how to use P2P clients and networks and how to share and download files safely. It also has a lot of automatic features, such as resuming interrupted downloads and automatic checksum checks that help prevent corrupted downloads. You can also set Xcelerator to resume downloads on start-up. It quickly downloaded test files.
Xcelerator 1.3 is freeware that works with all versions of Windows, from 95 to 7. It installs a desktop icon without asking and leaves items behind in the Start menu, which can be annoying but isn't too difficult to fix.
Publisher's Description
From Goforsharing:
Xcelerator is a reliable download-accelerator patch built for the ultimate download performance. In spite its very small size, Xcelerator brings high-tech architecture to add extra accuracy and speed to searching, sharing and downloading, with perfect integration into the native file sharing client. Through this addition to your software arsenal you'll finally get a proper management of the bandwidth of your Internet connection--a powerful combatant of slow downloads, disconnections and traffic congestion. Xcelerator comes exceptionally equipped in terms of features: it automatically resumes interrupted downloads, automatically performs checksum check up to prevent corrupted downloads, files completely downloaded or incorrect are removed automatically; facilitates multiple searches; configuration from last run is saved and auto loads at system start-up; a system tray icon. Besides the aforementioned features, Xcelerator's interface makes the program easily-manageable and shows useful information about your Internet connection, duration of acceleration, profile, the number of bytes sent and received.

"This software really works!"
Version: Xcelerator 2.3
Pros
Xcelerator 2.3's ability to work with what adapter you have in your hardware makes it very effective. And it allows you to make a choice on whatever is available. In my case- Microsoft or Realtek. The design is also quite simple and user-friendly.
Cons
Its being too visually small is disadvantageous to people with poor eyesight and perhaps it needs aesthetic makeover.
Summary
The purpose of download acceleration is first and foremost and that's its reason for being. And so - Xcelerator is (next to being) perfect for me. Just noticed how my downloading speed increased as soon as I installed this software. Thanks!

"doesnt regonize p2p program"
Version: Xcelerator 1.3
Pros
That it only works with "bittorrent" and its clones
That it refused to run meant that my Sharetastic installation and my XP system wouldnt be compromised and taken over with stronger hooks then a bittorrent program already uses.Cons
does not work with any other p2p software but Bittorrent and its clones
no options to add p2p software on to its listSummary
The same people that brought you Boost Machine...brought you Xcelerator
Both programs have the exact same interface (GUI)
Said it works with any p2p software...but only regonizes "bittorrent" and its clones
Created by the same people that created "Bittorrent" and its clones
I have no doubt what so ever that these programs use stronger hooks with more control over your system.
In the old days computer users never had to deal with such commercialism.
Relatively new computer users know nothing else...they think this is how its suppose to be...they see alot of people downloading a program and automatically they think it has to be the best one...their computer system slows down, crashes, or just doesnt look the same from one day to the next with a new toolbar and home page and search engines that only return hits with web pages full of ads.
The internet is one big AD ..... once a site becomes popular it fills up with ads.
Im old school and I want to use my computer, not have it use me. -
