    "So far so good.."

    Version: X-Plane 9.00 beta 4

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
As a pilot I use X-Plane on a PC desktop (because there're cheap). This version has the best provided aircraft and aircraft instrument panels of all the versions. Detail is much better in all aspects. Lines are smoother, blending looks good. Usability has a decent frame rate. Haven't tried the G1000 cockpits yet, this will make or break X-Plane as MS Flight Simulator X has an excellent G1000 cockpit display including weather and traffic. Unfortunately, it takes a super computer to run it. Scenery is getting better with every version of X-Plane and this version appears to have the best scenery. I couldn't find any roads or highways to check for accuracy, but the mountains, rivers and lakes seem to be up to par. Still checking some of the finer details of instrument flight and aerodynamics. One bug I found was the Cirrus "The Jet" landing lights can be seen under the wings of the aircraft when it flies over head. It's still beta.

"Definitely not for beginners. They should go to Flight Sim @ Microsoft"

    August 22, 2006  |   By Jon Burke

    Version: X-Plane 8.5b8

    Pros

Excellent graphics and real world responses from control inputs. A little skimpy on helicopter choices and more varieties of helicopters would definitely be appreciated. However, what is there is adequate. Fixed wing flying is as real as it gets, whether single or multi-engine (I am rated in both with thousands of hours in each).

    Cons

I have been unable to reverse the collective pitch for flying helicopters. I have had to become accustomed to moving the control down when I want to gain altitude and up when I want to descend. Fixed wing control inputs are great and very realistic. However, as with helicopters, a greater variety of aircraft would be a real benefit, such as a Cessna 206 or 210, or perhaps some of the newer aircraft such as the Diamond D-40 or Sirrus 20's or 22's would be wonderful. We are getting very close to seeing the appearance of very light jets being introduced into aviation and a few of these in the stables of possible aircraft would clearly be a forward thinking company's statement to a commitment to contemporary aviation.

Also, the prevalence of new instrument suites such as the Garmin 1000 or Avadine panels are becoming more widely available and seeing these as possible configurations in simulator panels is likely to make the flying experience all the more relavent and realistic in today's environment.

Pricing is variable. I paid $55 for my copy of the program at a local Mac store but found exactly the same program package for $39 at the local CompUserve store the next day.

    "Not for everybody"

    February 2, 2006  |   By ghostbyte

    Version: X-Plane 8.3

    Pros

    useful only for confirmed pilots

    Cons

There has never been the politness to make the smallest manual . As it goes it will never be . If you have no idea even as beginner of piloting even a small plane, do not waste your money to buy that stuff . No pleasure to learn without any help .

"As close as you are going to get to real flying on a home computer"

    January 31, 2006  |   By wendygirljp

    Version: X-Plane 8.3

    Pros

X-Plane runs off of aerodynamics, not "game logic" as others I have experienced. While it may not be 100% effective as a commercial flight simulator, it comes very close in graphics, speed, flight characteristics and overall realism.

    Cons

One of the ONLY problems I have had with X-Plane over the years is that, when the scenery updates while the program is running, the actual flight simulation stops for 5-10 seconds. It used to be as long as 30 seconds, so it has improved, even in this area, however, apparently, it has not yet been figured out, through computer strategy, how to update the scenery graphics while "in flight". Not enough to make me stop flying on the days I cannot do it in real life.
